Punk is usually very upbeat and has political themes. Anti-flag, the unseen

Ska is a hybrid of punk and reggae. Sublime

Emo is emotional. Singers sing in a high voice, hard to understand or listen to. For people who think their life sucks. Emo guys wear girl pants, shirts that are too small, and have weird messy hair. Dashboard confessional, from first to last

Screamo is pretty much emo but there is some screaming in it. from first to last, atreyu

Rock is mainstream stuff on the radio. avenged sevenfold, staind

Hard rock bands think that they are metal but they aren't. Godsmack, sytem of a down, slipknot

Death metal is the heaviest form of music. Heavily distorted, downtuned guitars, blastbeat drumming, death grunt vocals. Cannibal corpse, necrophagist

Punk- Revolutionary music. Something that stirs up society. Usually very upbeat. (Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Television, The Clash..predominantly 80's)

Ska- Kind of a punk/reggae fusion.. (Five Iron Frenzy...90s)

Emo/Screamo: YOU'RE PIERCING MY HEARTTTTTT I HATE YOU FOR DOING THIS TO MEEEE YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE I EVER LOVEEEEDDDD YOU KEEP STICKING NEEDLES INTO MY SOULLLL blah blah blah. Whiny, annoying bands whos lead singers all sound exactly the same. Dashboard Confessional, Yellowcard, Taking Back Sunday.. 90s- current)

Rock: Came about from a mixture of Country and Blues.Usually consist of a vocalist, guitar player, drummer, and a bassist. Guitars are usually the main sound. Just for the record, SIMPLE PLAN IS NOT ROCK KTHX. Strong beats, powerful vocals, usually upbeat but can have slower rhythms as well. ( The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles... 60's was the golden era)

Hard Rock: Like rock, but usually with a edgier sound and a more powerful vocalist. This came about mostly in the 70's. (Guns n' Roses, AC/DC)

Death Metal: Noise. Hard to listen to, understand, or enjoy. Usually for very frustrated individuals. (Black Sabbath.. 70s as well)

Rap: Overrated talking. (Eminem, Nelly, 50 Cent...90s-now)

Psychedelic: Usually drug-fuelled, crazy, trippy stuff... really creative and interesting to listen to though. (The Grateful Dead, The Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane...60s)

I know you didn't ask for what decade they were from, but I thought it might be useful to know. :)

Oh and if you have any more music related questions ask away, I'd love to answer.

Rock is rock. There's just different sounds and instruments used which make these new classifications. If you want to say you listen to rock, say rock, not "screamo, and all of that.

Punk - Upbeat simple music, somethign you could have a pool party to. :P Examples would be The Clash, (old) Green Day, and the Misfits.

Ska - This is just an odd genre, that started back in the 80's. We are now in what some might call the "third wave" of ska, (ska is kind of like...street rock) and bands like old No Doubt, The Bosstones and Really Big Fish are in this genre.

Emo - Rock with very emotional lyrics. Bands like Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional are in this genre.

Rock - Music that usually consists of guitars, a bass, drums and a singer - but not always. Very very wide genre, bands mentioned in every other genre in this answer would also be "rock". Basically not rap, not country..

Hard Rock - Rock with more of an edge, heavier guitar riffs and sometimes a growling singer. Bands like Papa Roach might be put in this catagory.

Screamo - like Emo - very emotional lyrics but usually the singer screams. Bands like UnderOATH and (some) Senses Fail might be put in this catagory.

Death Metal - very heavy metal with thrash metal influences. Bands that would be considered death metal are bands like Cannibal Corpse and Slayer.

Punk-old stuff was ok
ska-sucks ass
emo-the newest trend for stupid teenagers who think their life sucks
rock-sucks ass
hard rock-a name given by idiots
screamo-sucks ass because its hardcore mixed with emo.
hardcore-vocals kill something that has potential.
classic rock-awesome guitar players such as Jimi Hendrix.
death metal-fuckin awesome when you listen to bands like death, carcass, obituary, napalm death, and so on.
thrash metal-awesome as hell with bands like slayer, old metallica, megadeth and anthrax.
black metal-not something for christians but awesome in its own way.
power metal-awesome melodic parts with bands such as hammerfall and dragon force.
the reason i said that the metal genres are awesome is because its the only real music.its not my biased opinion.you have to listen to the right metal though.anything that came after nirvana sucks ass because nirvana sucked ass.other music such as emo, hardcore, and hip hop is all based on image.seriously, all i have to do is wear my moms makeup, put on girl pants, march right into some record company and get i will get a contract.its that easy for bands like my chemical romance and slipknot.music was not meant to be based on image.

TaintedPurity answered Friday October 7 2005, 10:12 pm:
Here are the stereotypes. They make it much easier to understand.

Punk - Hate the government, very simple music. (Blink182, SUM41, Good Charlette.) Or there is OLD punk, that just hates the government or wants to kill, like the Ramones or the Misfits.

Ska - Punk, with trumpets. (Old No Doubt, Mustard Plug)

Emo - Whiney voices, deep lyrics. They usually sing about their girlfriends breaking up with them and how sad they are because of it.(My Chemical Romance, Dashboard Confessional, All American Rejects, Yellowcard)

Screamo - Whiney voices mixed with hardcore screams like in metal. They still sing about girls breaking up with them but they talk about how MAD they are about it instead of how SAD they are. (From Autumn to Ashes, Atreyu, As I Lay Dying)

There are a few to get you started.
