Why do Americans who have some Irish ancestry in them feel the need to be all proud about it? Some of these people are 2nd or 3rd greneration Americans and have never even left the country.

I'm not fanatical, I'm just proud. When you're red haired, green eyed, and pale, you get asked almost daily if you're Irish. So you either have to learn to be proud or just be annoyed.
The Irish (as many many other cultures) have much to be proud of. They have a rich, intersting, and beautiful history. Actually, I'm quite a bit offended at your drinking remark. I'm 20, and I've never taken a drink in life. No one on the Irish side of my family is an alcoholic, and most don't drink at all. So please don't generalize.
Other than that, it's good to be proud of one's heritage, that's what keeps it alive!! If no one is proud of there heritage, eventually the world will just be one big boring melting pot of mongrels who don't give a damn where they came from, and therefore lose their individuality. They have more to be proud of than drinking like you say. There is many things to be proud of, like the beautiful country in general. But its not all good... alot of people are pale that are irish and since "tan" aka being orange but thinking your tan, is in then the pale people are just sort of left to a decision. That is either to be proud of who you are and the skin your in OR try to be fake tan. I prefer the first one.
But besides that, anyone should be proud of their heritage! You wouldn't be you without it. Alot of people are proud of theres like African Americans, all sorts of people that have ancestors from Central America, and definatly ITALIANS. Oh and also Germans and Czechs.

Just because you've never been to the country, doesn't mean you don't have the right to be proud to be partly of that nationality.
sbloemeke answered Friday September 30 2005, 4:02 pm: Just as african-americans are proud of their ancestry, Irish feel the same way. It's because the Irish used to be discriminated against, and live under tougher condition. They developed a sense of pride after laws became passed, and some believed they were above the law. That's where the pride came in. You are proud to be Irish because your ancestors faced harsh conditions.
