FunnyCide answered Tuesday September 20 2005, 1:20 pm: Me too. Except I don't get to skip school; I just get to be miserable. Sometimes I have cramps BEFORE the "week of." I definitely feel your pain, it totally bites.
Try some Midol. That usually works. It's a little expensive... [about $5.50 for 24 capsules] but it works. Now, because of the price, I don't use it. Simply put, we use the cheapest stuff out there. Ibuprofen (purchased at Wal*Mart, Kroger, Wallgreens, CVS, Target, K-Mart etc.) is decent enough, and cheap. Tylenol / Advil are okay as well, but not exactly great for teenagers.
Whenever you have extremely bad cramps, lie in the most comfortable position possible, and place a heating pad on the place where the cramps are the worst. If you get cramps in your back and stomach, focus on what hurts the worst. For all-around relief (or help, at least), try taking a hot bath. I mean HOT bath. Don't burn yourself, but the warmer the water is, the more relaxed your muscles will be, and the relaxed muscles will help relieve cramps.
When my cramps are at their worst, I can't even sleep in a bed - not enough support, it moves too much etc. I either sleep on the floor of my room or on a sofa. (Not a pull-out sofa, just a regular couch.) To me that helps some.
Try not to wear constrictive clothing to bed; sometimes I can't even wear sleeping pants because it hurts too much. Just go to bed in a long, loose T-shirt and underwear. Try not to prop your upper body up with many pillows, it helps to lie flat.
Take the pain killer of your choice according to the box recommendations (like every 4-6 hours or whatever). Use a heating pad and hot baths. Get lots of sleep. Spicy foods make me feel worse, though that might just be me. Drink LOTS AND LOTS of water. Not soda. Not coffee. Not juice. WATER. Good old H2O. It will make you feel much better, look better, and besides - who wants to be dehydrated AND on their period?
If the recommended things don't help, go to a doctor. A family practicioner might be able to help, but you'll probably have best luck with an OB/GYN.
