Question Posted Saturday September 17 2005, 9:12 am

ok i have 2 questions having to do w/ tampon use and toxic shock syndrome.
*that rule that u leave a tampon in 4-8 hours... is that just like thats how long you can use it and then you have to wear a pad or something...or can you change to a new one?
*well i accidently fell asleep on the couch last nite and i still had my tampon in since around 5:30 to about 8 (AM) I'm extremely scared that i might be at risk for toxic shock syndrome. Can someone tell me what the symptoms are? and how to treat them? please help me i am so scared! also i am 13/f if that does anything. please help me!

I sleep with my tampon in alot too. TSS is VERY rare. I wouldn't be worried unless you start feeling weird.

Toxic Shock syndrom, you will start feeling extremely sick already, don't worry if you feel fine right now, just change your tampon now. try not to leave it in for long next time. It is better to use a maxi pad while you sleep. In most instances TSS usually occurs mostly in women who leave them in for over a day. Don't worry so much ok.

TSS is fortunately very rare. Symptoms are you feel very sick. Sore throat and mouth & watery diarrhea.

You can safely sleep with a tampon in place. All cases of toxic shock I have ever heard of were caused by women who put in a tampon...probably at end of their period, and then forgot it was there. Keep one in for weeks and you just may get TSS. It sounds really ridiculous but believe me, it happens. :)

calm down dear! alright you change it every 4-8 hours and you can chage into a new one...it just needs to be taken out.
530 pm till 8 am? thats possible but i think you would know by now. usually it starts with a fever. if you have the box of tampons it has information on this. if you have sympoms, go to the hostital. dont use them if you dont know all the information...stop and read the instructions...it will save you. <3

Calm down!! You won't get a toxic shock syndrome. You can sleep in your tampon, swim, shower, run, anything! You should change your tampon every 4 hours and that is because you don't want to start to smell or leak. Its better to change it often but nothing bad will happen. It won't get stuck or anything. You can keep chaning tampons and after you take it out you don't have to wear a pad. You can just use another tampon.
