Scared to fly...

Question Posted Wednesday September 14 2005, 10:32 pm

On Friday (16th) I'm going to visit my aunt in Florida. I live in NJ, so I'm taking a plane down with my dad to see her. The thing is, ever since 9\11 I have been PETRIFIED to fly. I've gone on vacation a few times after that and I cried pretty much the entire way to our vacation spot I was so scared. I'm really trying to get over this, or at the very least figure out a way to calm myself down. Anyone have any ideas?

There are certain drugs you can get at drugstores, or from doctors, that can calm you down on the flight. And they also prevent sickness, like on the flight. When you first are taking off, I breath in and out deeply, squeeze your dads hand, and chew gum. It all helps in the end. Don't worry hunny :)

The fact of the matter is, we never know what's going to happen moment to moment of life. We'are all vulnerable on a daily basis. You can't dwell on the possibility of death on a plane or in a car etc., because you'll spend your life worrying about the inevitable and miss out on LIVING.

Now I'm not saying your anxiety is not formidable or significant. You might talk to your family doctor about your fear of flying. Sometimes they'll prescribe a mild sedative to help you 'rest and relax' during your flight.

At the very least, they are much more strict concerning what you can take upon a flight and random searching. I know I almost didn't make a flight in DC because I had bought my boyfriend this small frame that had little decorative replica swords. We're talking something akin to a beefed up toothpick made of metal. They insisted it was a 'weapon' and I almost missed my flight.

Again, the probability of something happening to you is VERY, VERY small... ESPECIALLY if we're talking about another terrorist attack. As others have said, bring music and books to help distract you, and try not to be afraid because that's exactly what terrorists are trying to achieve.

Ahh. Oh my gosh, I've been in your situation before. I've rode so many planes since 9/11 by my self and I was scared SHITLESS. Especially since my dad would be an ass the night before I'd have to fly alone and mention the whole thing that happened on 9/11! =(

The best thing that you could possibly do to take your mind off of the whole thing is listen to music, like take a cd player & headphones, and just listen to it. That's what I did to pass the time away. Chances are nothing will happen, everyone gets worried, whether or not they think about 9/11 or just the plane crashing for some unknown reason.

But, everyone seriously is probably in your boat & worried that something might happen. So that might make you feel a little better. Plus there will be business people on your plane that have to travel like every week so they've gotten used to it! =) Seriously, don't worry about it. There's nothing to be afraid of! =) Flying is a lot of fun besides the whole thing worrying about 9/11 & terrorists and all of that right? I love flying, lol. =P Sorry, over excitement.

You're so lucky your going to Florida, I've never been there before. =/ So sad. Haha. Well have fun!

This is what those evil malicious bastards that committed those deads want. They want us scared as hell. Our stance, and Bush's stance should be we're not to take this lying down--as it is.

In fact, air-safety has imporved a lot more since September 11th than ever before. Granted, it is still not that great but they do in fact have cockpit doors that are fortified meaning nobody else can kick down or open them. Federal Marshals can sometimes be undercover.

If a plane is presumed in trouble there are signals in the cockpit to indicate it. Fighter jets if they think a damn thing is wrong on an airliner guide it back to safety and start questioning people.

About all that you will experience is a takeoff that you did not like and a landing you did not like. The rest of time you will be safe and fine. 100% of most flights go well.

As far as crashes go--forget it. Airplanes are far more safer than any mode of transportaion and you will be fine.

I have no idea where you live but see if you can squeeze in one of those lessons where people will take you on a helicopter (tour of your city) or in flight lesson because you are scared by Friday. Once up there, you'll soon ignore anything else.

Like you there's no flipping way I would go on a regular jetliner without working over my fears first but that would happen.

Bring some music or a book that relaxes you. Something you would listen to in your room, where you feel safe. Also, try to sleep on the plane, it will make time go by faster and you won't worry so much. Last, just try not to focus on the thought that you are flying.
