cross country

Question Posted Friday September 9 2005, 9:54 pm

ok so i just started cross country today and it is so hard. ive done track for 3 years but that was nothing compared to this. for 3 hours we just ran! we did about 5 miles. i came in 2nd to last/tied for last every time! ive never been fast but my track coach told me i should give cross country a try. it was SO inspiring and it makes me feel REALLY good but i felt like i was going to throw up the entire time and when we compete against other schools, theres just no way really! should i drop out now before its really a commitment and do winter and/or spring track or should i keep it up and hope/pray to get better?

thanks

i think that you should stick with it. i know that its going to seem hard at first, but with you doing track before, things will get better. train as hard as you can, and you will do better. slowly, but not so slowly, you will get faster and get used to the pace of XC. keep going, giving up is the easy way out. push yourself.

well first off, if you ran for 3 whole hours, you did more than 5 miles! for a team, it takes about 50-55 minutes for 5 miles. you just started today so i dunno if you really got the full experience and everything. the first day is hard...really hard and you will be sore tomorrow. i was actually in your position not too long ago. i was second last but i had a great time, it felt good to finally be done and have my team cheering me on. i think you should try a road race before the actual meets to kinda get the competion nerves out of the way. my team ran together like at the same pace so try to keep up with them but dont get too crazy. i actually quit...im not saying you should but i was getting injuries and 3 hours practice (lifting, core training, etc) was too long. i miss it a lot but i thnk it was the best choice for me...i quit 2 days before the first meet after being on the team for 3 weeks and being wrapped up for a whole week. thats just me, ill keep you in my thoughts & prayers. <3

I believe you should never quit to a fault. When it comes to your health though and physical signs your body cannot take this or you are almost vomiting it is not right. What the hell is this coach thinking? Three hours of this and sweating in heat without drinks from what you tell me is not right and some parent ought to protest. I am serious, we hear of kids and teens collapsing and in some cases dying because of this 3 hour push for this and that bullcrap from coaches who do not see how dangerous this scenario is especially for lesser or non-conditioned folk.

My advice back out of this one and no matter what if you cannot take three hours flipping say so as should your friends and everyone QUIT ON HIM when tired and get drinks. Be vocal each one of you and you can actually tell a teacher, prof, coach NO when you feel you cannot do something and if an explanation is needed explain but nobody come detention or not can force you to push yourself or health to the breaking point for a stupid race or
athletic class. Either drop them as a course or drop them in public when you feel people have had enough and need water.

I think that you shouldn't worry about competing other schools. No matter what, if you try your hardest, you will get better. Getting better is always going past your limit. However, if you do decide to stop cross country, then go ahead and do track. Just remember, the harder you try, the better you'll get. Just try not to go so hard so that you start vomiting. (That could be unhealthy) Good luck!
