ScratchesOnTheWall answered Tuesday September 6 2005, 2:03 pm: Davey Jones' Locker literally refers to the sea-bed. Davey Jones is considered to preside over all evil spirits of the sea and was a comon nautical term when chucking someone overboard (dead or alive). Yes now it is often used more generally as a euphemism for death, but particularly death at sea. [ ScratchesOnTheWall's advice column | Ask ScratchesOnTheWall A Question ]

As for Davy Jones...he is referenced in "The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle" written in 1750. Davy Jones is the sailor's name for the evil spirits of the ocean that take many forms. However, why sailors call these spirits Davy Jones is unknown.
In one of the other answers you received, the columnist referred to Davy Jones appearing on the Brady Bunch. This is Davy Jones of the Monkees, from the 1960's. There is actually a reference on that show of sending Davy Jones to Davy Jones' locker, but he is not the source of this term. [ cailoisa's advice column | Ask cailoisa A Question ]

I don't really know a better way to explain it, sorry. [ S_C's advice column | Ask S_C A Question ]
