Question Posted Wednesday August 31 2005, 10:05 pm
ok i just started algebra in school yesterday, since it was my first day and in middle school i only did pre-algebra so i dont really know algebra.... I need some help on questions
one of them is 1 7/8 + 3/4... any idea??
5 3/4 * 1/3.......... 2 1/5 divided 4/5
2/5- 1/10
IF ANYONE COULD HELP ME out with how too do these... i only did 1 of each kind so i can learn it but i need help on how to do each one...
Also in the directions it says Perform the indicated skill... (i get that in other words it means do the question)... and simplify your answer if possible (does that mean make it the smallest it can be??... im pretty sure) BUT IF U HELP me i will RATE YOU A FIVE!!!!!

Add this to the 7, and put it over the Denominator you originally had. 3/4=6/8, right? You just multiply top and bottom by the same factor, and you get 6/8. You want this to be the sameas the number you are adding/subtracting. So, the 8*1 is 8, added to 7 is 15, so 15/8. Add the 6/8 you get from the 3/4, and your finaly answer is 21/8. Rules say that the numerator cannot be larger than the denominator, so from the numerator, subtact in 8s. You can do that twice, right? So, it is 2+5/8. If it was 6/8, you'd have to simplify it to 3/4.
Multiplication to me is easier. Let's use your example.
5+3/4 is the same a 23/4, so you're somewhere.
Multiply by 1/3. Multiple both numerators (23 and 1), and both denominators (3*4). That gets you 23/12. Simplify to 1 + 11/12
To divide, you take the last number and reciprical it. Like if it is 3/4, make it 4/3. Then, follow the same procedure as multiplying.
To subtract, go about in making a common denominator, and ust subtract the 2 upper numbers.
Hope I helped! I am in Pre-Calc, so if you need any help, feel free to drop one in my inbox.

So. Do you agree that 6/8 = 3/4?
You should. Do you see how I divided both numbers by 2?
So. Since they're equal you can substitute.
1 7/8 + 6/8 = ?
But you also ned to simplify the mixed number. (1 7/8 ). To do so, multiply the bottom number (8) times the whole number (1) and add the top number (7). Keep the bottom number on the bottom.
That = 15/8
So 15/8 + 6/8 =21/8.
To reduce or simplify, you see if you can divide both numbers (21 and 8) by another number. Iff so, you do that. We can't do that here.
Ok for #2, you need to simplify the mixed #...
23/4 * 1/3.
use - in your fraction instead of /.
so 23 1
--- x ---
4 3
Cross multiply (23*3 and 1*4). 23*3 goes on top.
#3 Again, simplify the mixed number
11/5 / 4/5 is the same. Division is dividing, so it can look like this.
To divide, youo flip the second fraction and multiply.
ScratchesOnTheWall answered Thursday September 1 2005, 8:10 am: Ok, don't panic it's very simple. What you need to do is make both of your bottom numbers the same. So for example, in the 1 7/8+3/4 example, you want to make the 3/4 have an 8 on the bottom also. To make 4 into an 8, obviously you have to times by 2.
The golden rule is always do to the top number what you do to the bottom.
So, because you've timesed by two on the bottom number, you do the same on the top. So now 3/4 looks like 6/8. This is exactly the same amount as 3/4 but in a form that makes it easier to add with.
So then all you have to do is:
7/8+6/8
Just add the top two numbers together leaving the bottom as 8.
So: 7/8+6/8= 13/8
Because the 8 goes into the 13, you have an extra whole number, so you can also write that as:
1 5/8
Then remember the one you had at the front of your original question and add it on and you have:
2 5/8
So the steps are:
1) make the bottom number the same (but only by multiplying)
2) multiply your top number by the same amount you've multiplyed the bottom number
3) add/ subtract the TOP numbers leaving the bottom number as it was.
4) check if you can make any whole numbers from the fraction you get (if the top number is bigger than the bottom number, you can)

Okay well I'm going to use the first one as an example.
Just pretend the whole nuumber isn't there. Okay look at the denumerator (bottom number) and see what number can go into both of them. So for the first problem 8 can go into both of them. So figure that out. After you did you just add them.
Perform the indicated skill... when you said make it smallest it can be, just reduce it.
