i know the umbilical cord is cut when the baby is born and it falls off, but what happens to the part of it that is connected to the mother?

Hey do you mean the cord that is connect to the mother? I believe it gets pulled out after the baby is born. thats how it looked like when i saw this picture of it. hope i helped. take care =) x3SweetStar.

That part is attached to the placenta, which detaches from the uterine wall. A few extra contraction after the baby is out and the placenta is delivered (otherwise known as "the afterbirth"). The blood from the cord is often collected and stored because it contains many stem cells that can be used to treat potential illnesses in the baby's future.
