Red hair, unlike any other hair color, is tied to a specific genetic flaw. It is also unique in that it's tied to an anti-survival trait: red hair is associated with a higher susceptibility to skin cancer.
A study a couple of years ago also indicated that redheads need more anesthesia to receive the same level of pain reduction as non-redheads, but it isn't clear whether this is because redheads are resistant to pain medication, or are just more sensitive to pain. I have been told by a doctor that redheads do tend to have anomalous medical reactions; for example, they are more likely to experience a temperature *drop* under circumstances that would give a non-redhead a fever.
That said, scientists speculate that one reason that the genes for red hair have not been bred out of our species (despite their minor but definite contra-survival association), is because redheads are simply more sexually appealing. In other words, people - guys AND girls - tend to find red hair attractive. Which gives redheads an improved chance of reproducing.
Of course, I'm a redhead. And I prefer redheads. So I may be biased.
