one-year deferral prior to college

Question Posted Saturday July 9 2005, 2:33 pm

i am going to defer enrollment to College for one year in order to train for tennis and hopefully get a scholarship. Has anyone taken a year off after high school, and if so, do you have any suggestions as to how I could continue studying (community college, etc...) I have already been accepted to a University (Drexel) and also accepted for my deferral request. Also, if I want to apply to other universities can I still do so? Does deferring hurt my chances of acceptance? Thanks!

A community college is a great, affordable way to get an education or even keep up with your education before going to college. If you've already decided your major, find out what courses are required. Many of the general ed course (math, science, english) can be taken at a community college and then transferred to the university when you're ready to go. Just make sure that the university will accept the credits for the courses you took at the community college.

Lots of peopel do this. Some people defer fro amny many years, not just one. Your chances are fine. People get accepted into university's in their 30's

I defered for a year before attending University, but I was I was studying in a religious school for that year.
As for applying to other universities, the fact that you are enrolled somewhere else will not hurt your chances, because the schools do not know. Unless you were accepted Early Decision, there should not be any issues with applying other places.

Talk to your guidance councelor at school. Even if you have graduated and go back in september and talk to them. They'll have a much better idea how certain schools you may be interested in work.

The defferal shouldn't hurt you at all. You can be accepted to more than one college or university before choosing which one to actually go to normally. Why would a defferal be different?
