If you're using Internet Explorer: Click on "Tools", choose "Internet Options", click the "Content" tab, click the "AutoComplete" button and then click the "Clear Forms" button.
If you're using Firefox: Click on "Tools", choose "Options", then choose "Privacy", then click the "Clear" button next to "Saved Form Information".

I've searched for some pretty odd and sometimes dirty things and I've been afraid somebody'd see them from the pull-down menu. Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and I believe AOL, tend to do that. If you want to get rid of them, from what I know, you just can't. The history has nothing to do with it. If you want to avoid it, use a different browser like Opera.
Those things in the list go away eventually over time though. It takes a month or a week or something. I know the Googletoolbar thing holds only so many in the pull down. After so many, they start getting over-written by new search topics.
