Linux or Windows?

Question Posted Thursday June 16 2005, 1:03 pm

I'm getting a new computer soon and I'm not sure what operating system to install. I've been using Windows XP for a while but i've had quite a few people tell me that Linux is better. I use a computer for playing games, watching films and word processing. Which operating system does these things the best? I already have windows xp so cost isn't an issue.

I personally love Windows XP. I have not used linux myself, but I have had people tell me they did not like it as well as XP.

I'd dual boot if I were you. Install your Windows XP first, but partition your hard drive so there's room for linux. Then install a simple linux distro, like SuSE. You'll be able to experience the greatness of linux but if any of your games don't run, you can shut down your computer and switch to windows. I've been running linux for almost five years and it's amazing... I'd never go back to windows. And SuSE comes with software that's gotten me into stuff I never even thought I'd like. I'm convinced that if every american tried linux out and saw how stable and fast and secure it is, Windows would be in big trouble!

If you're an avid gamer you would want to stick with Windows. There are a few game distributions that offer their games in Linux, but not all gaming companies offer this. But if you want to play around with Linux and its programs, why not make your new computer into a dual-boot? That way you have both and can switch between the two depending on what you are going to be doing on the computer at that time.

If you decide to go with a Linux distribution, make sure that you have all the Linux drivers for your hardware before installation. That way you don't run into any problems when installing.

He's right, linux is more complitcated than windows, there are a LOT less games for it, unless you use programs similar to WINE. Just go with Windows xp home. With linux you will compile you own binaries, you will have to set up the internet connection, networking etc. <---Not on all distros but on some.

If you're playing games DO NOT go linux.

Linux is a little more complicated and I would only recommend it for people who are not tech illiterate.

Watching films wouldnt be a problem on linux. But if you're into a lot of gaming, linux is not your answer. Its too complicated.
