Scoliosis

Question Posted Tuesday May 31 2005, 7:50 pm

I recently just found out that I have scoliosis. I have to get a brace and was fitted today for it. I'm going to have to wear it a minimum of 16 hours a day. I was wondering if there is any one who can tell me what it was like having a back brace and give me advice on when to wear it, what to do in the summer, and things like that. Thank you very much.

Hey! i have scoliosis and i really suggest that you wear it all the time even if your minimum is only sixteen hours but the more the better. and as for when to wear it i would wear it during the day mostly because thats when your move the most and wearing it when you sleep is good too. um i would only take it off when you shower or go swimming or something, or if you need the be flexible. in the summer just wear it as you normally would and wear it more because generally in the summer youre probably going to go swimming alot or have your brace off alot. if you have anymore questions feel free to ask me anything because i know alot about scoliosis. oh ya and if you dont wear it you'll probably end up having surgery. i know having a brace is annoying but i had to wear one for five years and it didnt work beacuse i didnt wear it enough so now i have to have surgery!

Good luck and hope i helped! if you need anything else just ask me!!
Please rate me!

I've also got scoliosis, and thank goodness was not needed to be fit for a brace. But I know of people that have, and you won't really have a problem with it. It hardly shows under your clothes unless you're really into the thin-fabric-and-tiny-shirts-for-fifty-dollars generation, then you may have to change your style a bit. Wear it anytime that you're not in a swimsuit or something, and then you probably wont have to wear it as long. You are allowed to take it off to swim and do physical activities (ones that aren't restricted). I'd probably buy some baby powder or cornstarch to put on your skin in case it rubs some days, and you should be fine. I would also talk to your doctor about maybe having some physical therapy, because sometimes, that can actually make the scoliosis better. Thats what I did, and then a brace wasn't needed! Good luck! ♥

shouldn't your doctor explain that to you thoroughly?

I had a friend that had a brace. She didn't have to wear it forever thank goodnes. She can take it off to swim and stuff. She just needs to not leave it off for a long period of time. The more she wears it per day, the less days she will have to wear it. She will probably need some baby powder at least.

Definatly wear it at night, other then that just during the day whenever you feel comftorable having it on. Its nothing to be ashamed of - and after all this is your health so you should take it seriously :)

My friend has scoliosis. She wears it while she sleeps & at school. She pretty much wears it all the time so that way if she wants to do something in which she can't wear it, it will be okay for her to take it off!
