Question Posted Monday May 30 2005, 7:06 pm

I'm trying to do a report on the foster care system. I've heard some aweful things about it and I've heard some wonderful things about it. I've already got the researched facts on the system and what the states have to say about but I'm looking for people's opinions on it. If anyone has any stories or opinions on the foster care system that would be a lot of help. Please share your thoughts. As I said I've heard some horrible things about the system and I'm hoping that my report will bring about some changes. So does anyone have any thoughts, opinions, ideas, stories, etc. about the foster care system in your state or any state or just in general? Thank you so much for your help. I will rate 5's.

Mike

Since Dangernerd answered a foster care question a bit ago I was going to suggest to drop a note in his inbox. Looks like he answered for you though. Sounds like he could have more to say on the subject though...Check out his column if you have any other unanswered questions. Bet he will tell you more if you need it. :)

Howdy Mike,

I was taken away from home when I was eight years old for "abuse" that never happened.

I got in a fight after school, and they simply would not listen at school the next day. They insisted that my Dad did it.

My parents thought we lived in America, home of the brave, land of the free, so they went the court route.

At the first hearing, the lawyer my dad hired said that for $50,000(1978 dollars) they could have me back for breakfast in the morning.

My Dad was SHOCKED! An hour later he walked into the courtroom and told the family services judge what the lawyer said, and demanded he be arrested.

They never saw me even for a second in the next six months.

The lawyer of course denied it, and one can only assume that the judge was to be the owner of some of the suggested bribe as well.

I was then placed in a group home, and then another, and then a foster home with a 70 year old woman who drank herself to sleep every day lying on the couch listening to Lawerence Welk records.

Another group home.

Relatives... Bad... Better in the group home.

This was followed by another group home where I was almost killed. (Beaten near to death.)

Then perhaps the one honest social worker on earth found my case. A woman named Janet Hills.

She made my return to my family possible and layed it on the line for my parents:

CPS is a money grubbing profit wonder. "You will not get your child back until you no longer have the ability to pay the monthlies."

If you didn't know: The state doesn't pay for the child's "care" if the parents are working.

The parents pay every month for their child who, in this case, was being held hostage.

In the end, my parents business folded, they lost the house and equipment and ended up in an apartment.

Then, from hillcrest receiving home in Hillcrest, CA I was shown the door. A 12 year old boy was put out on the street without a word to his parents who were 20 miles away.

My dad didn't believe Janet. But as soon as the money ran out, they chucked me right out the door.

There is a great deal more to tell, but I don't think I will here and now.

DangerNerd.

P.S. They said that my dad beat me in a rage and tried to kill me. He is an Army Ranger Pathfinder formerly attached to the 101st Airborne division. If he would have beat me in a rage, I would be well and truly dead. There was no basis in fact for any of it, and $50,000 would have saved 3 years of our lives and everything we owned. My Dad just wouldn't believe the system was that corrupt, top to bottom... He believes now.
