Healthy Eating Habits

Question Posted Tuesday May 24 2005, 8:25 pm

I'm a 16 yr old female. I've been trying my hardest to change my eating habits, but it's so hard! I've been trying to avoid junk food but it's really difficult, and I haven't been doing the best job. It's just so much easier to eat something bad for you. I buy all healthy food for myself but my family loves stuff thats bad for you, and I can't help but grab some junk food instead of an apple or soemthing. I need to start avoiding it but it's EVERYWHERE! Please give me some advice on how to ignore the temptation and become healthier! Thank you so much. I rate 5's!

Ask your family to help you. You can all do it together, or they can just keep the junk food hidden from you! But juat make sure you dont do anything crazy like stop eating.. once you starteating again you gain weight faster anyway so its just not worth it. But.. if your family wont help you just doyou besttoeat the stuffyouknowyoushouldeat ratherthan what you crave.

Apparently, the worst thing you can do is tell yourself 'you can't have ANY of that because it is forbidden junk.' That just makes you want it more. Try for balance. Be conscious of what you eat, but don't tell yourself that one ice cream cone (as an example) is a big failure, because that just makes sticking to healthy eating so much more difficult. Don't avoid the food, you need to develop the ability to look at junk food and tell yourself that perhaps next time you'll have that, or that even, you would feel better about yourself if you passed on the junk-type food. You will never really suceed as being a genuine 'healthy eater' if you can't see junk food and have the ability to just say no, because it is all in your head. So, make sure you remind yourself not to make junk food 'forbidden' and that it is okay to eat something unhealthy once and a while, but you'll feel good about your eating habits if you can be around the junk food, knowing that it isn't something that you need.

My neighbor has this sign on her fridge: "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels". Best dieting slogan I've ever heard.

Suggestions:
-Chew gum, suck on sugar-free candies
-Stay out of the kitchen
-Take up knitting, or some other activity that will keep you busy to prevent wanting to snack
-Watch your portion size- if you decide to have some chips, take out a bowl, put some in, then close the bag and put it back in the cubbord.
-Don't forbid yourself from eating any one food- moderation is key. If it's off-limits, it makes it all the more tempting.

well...what i did was find one or two healthy alternatives to junk food. One thing i really like is yoplait fat free yogurts. i used to HATE yogurt, and fat free foods in general are pretty gross, but this is really good stuff. But for you it could be something different, just a few things you really enjoy that are healthy, and the next time you find yourself reaching for a cookie or something unhealthy, just tell yourself "i don't need that. i can be just as happy with this _____." and eat your healthy alternative. as you get more used to not eating the junk food anymore, you can start to incorporate more healthy foods to replace more junk food. gradually you will see a huge difference without giving up all of your favorite things cold turkey. you may not get immediate results the way you wanted, but two months of gradual change is much better than three months of frustration and feeling guilty about not being able to become instantly healthier. hope i helped <3

Yea, you are right it is hard. Don't torture yourself by trying to stop eating it all at once, slowly transform your habits. You will also feel better when you change your habits and that is always a plus! Since it doesn't sound like you are on a diet, don't give up everything. Treat yourself to your favorite things once in a while. Hope it works out for you!
