Well, I'm black and i get my hair chemically straightened about twice a year. it depends on how much you do it and how strong the perm is. My mom or hairdresser usually does mine, so the prices may vary, but I can tell that it only hurts if you've been scratching your head all day, then it burns. If you keep up with it, for me personally, it can last up to 4 months, but your hair may be different from mine, so results may vary just a bit. You should ask a professional for more details.

i got mine chemically straightened twice already, and I'm gonna do it a third time in a few months. i kno it's bad for you, but it's not like THAT bad. I just have some split ends, but other than that, my hair's pretty decent.

When i did it in china, it costed like 34 u.s. dollars, and when I did it in the u.s, it costed like 250 dollars. wow. and it was sooo much better when I did it in china too!!

it actually DOES hurt. like when they pull the hair down, they pull it really hard, and it feels like someone's just yanking on your hair. and sometimes the hair salon ppl suck at handling the straightening iron, so it burns your scalp.

the straight hair usually lasts for 6 months - 1 year. for my hair, the bottom is like straight and all, and since hair is still growing out, it's really frizzy at the top and stuff

i think you should try getting it chemically straightened cuz it'll look really nice and all.

OMG! Whatever you do, don't get it chemically straightened. I swear to god my mom did that and her hair like... broke all over place. She had to chop it all off and it used to be really long. Your friends are right. It does burn but only a little. Not really. I hope I helped.
Best of luck!

HyperactiveMiss answered Monday May 23 2005, 8:38 pm:
I straighten my hair chemically. Lucky for me though, my mom is a hair stylist. So for me, it's technically free. lol. So I can't really help you on the price, but I would say it costs more than a hundred dollars (professionally done). My mom did the straightening perm. on her last client for like 200-300 dollars. It might be cheaper elsewhere since my mom charges more because she doesn't like straightening hair (too much work).

I definitely do not recommend you to do it at home. Most likely if you have someone else do it for you at home, the product will be really bad for your hair, and the person doing your hair might screw it up accidentally. It's best to have someone professional do your hair with professional products, that way you'll avoid problems and it won't totally kill your hair. Trust me, it won't kill your hair if you get it professionally done with professional products. If you can't tell by now, I keep emphasizing that part. My hair is long, super straight, shiny, and healthy! So that's why I keep emphasizing that.

About how long it lasts...it depends on how curly/wavy your hair is and what product you're using. For me it took more than four hours, and my hair isn't that bad, just puffy and kinda wavy. For me, I had lots of sitting around and waiting time. So it might be a good idea to look at magazines or a book.

If you get it done professionally, it shouldn't hurt. It might burn or itch a little, but you'll barely notice it. Your hair stylist will probably check on you to see if you feel any burning or itching, so just be sure to let them know what you're feeling. The chemicals might make your hair a little lighter, if you don't mind. Mine used to be like jet black, and now it's kinda dark brown. I don't mind though, I think it's cool lol. You can see my picture on my advice column.

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot. I get my hair retouched every six months. Six months doesn't sound that great, but compared to having to use a straightener and blow drying my hair every day...six months is awesome! The perm will last forever, but of course, you need to get it retouched because your hair keeps on growing out ;p

Hope your hair turns out great!

okay.. here it goes. i have my hair straightend too, but i use a straightener. cause my hair is a little wavy. but if you do get it straightend it will be just like a perm. it wont last forever but it will last a long time. and it will cost maybe 50 or more if you have long hair. it wont hurt at all but it might get hot!

well, first thing (not to sound racist), but usually, black people should get it because there hair can handle the chemicals better. I get mine done for about 5 or 10 dollars and my grandma actually does it for me. It does hurt sorta. It will burn your head if you scratch your head before you get it done, so try not to scratch your head for at least the day before because i did it and my whole head burned pretty much. Mine lasts about 4-6 months, but my hair has a little white in it, but mostly black, so it might be different.
