Does ADD medication help you lose weight?

Question Posted Tuesday May 17 2005, 8:09 pm

I am 14 and female. I get A's in school, but sometimes I think I have ADD because when I'm not interested I just space out.

Well, at least I WANT to think I have ADD.

You see, my friend told me that ADD medication like Aderol and Ritalin (I can't spell, please help there..) makes your metabolism hella fast and makes you lose weight like crazy. Many of my friends have ADD and I can prove this statement true because they have all lost weight since their diagnosis. Now I'm not the skinniest person but I'm at an ideal weight right now. I would like to lose at least 10 pounds or so. It isn't a lot and it would do me good.

I wonder if this is worth it. Should I go get tested? I know it's like using crystal meth to get skinny like my friend did, because it is a perscription drug, but when I told my mom she almost started crying she was so mad and my friends are worried about me. Is it really that bad? Should I consider that I may have ADD even though my attention span is pretty long for my age and that would just be an excuse to lose weight? Or should I just drop the topic? I know this is really vain, but I need some advice. Thanks.

Well, its known for some people, that ritilan makes you not hungry, but not for everyone. Do not take it unless you are tested for sure that you have ADD. If youre that desperate to loose weight, eat healthy and exercise.

ADD medication has lots of side affects and a loss of apetite is one of them. So yeh, I guess ADD medication would help you loose weight.

I myself have ADD and I can tell you the side effects of the medicine myself.

Yes, it does make you lose weight, but not in a good way. Ritalin can make you skin and bone, no chest, no hips, no nothing. It also takes awya a lot of the nutrients that your body needs though causing you to get pale and sick.

Most people with ADD don't just space out, there are a lot of other side effects. ADD isn't just a health disorder, it's a mental one. When you have ADD your brain actually functions differently than everyone elses.

Did these problems just start or did you have them from childhood? Most people with ADD had a hyper activity disorder as a child, spacing out too, not always of course.

If you want to get thinner I suggest bbuying a Tae-Bo video tape/DVD, or aerobics, aerobics are the best wya toget thin because not only are you losing fat, you're also keeping your body healthy and in top shape, and you have a little bit of muscle to show off. No one likes skin and bones.

I hoped that I could help! Good luck!

Honey, you dont have Add. The side effects of using ritalin when you dont have severe add are very very powerful. If you want to lose weight, i consider dieting or exersize, i know it sounds crazy but it just might work! And enough about all this talk about ADD, its making me sick. Eh, good luck with the everything.

I strongly doubt you have ADD, you just really want to have it so it makes you think you do. But I'm not doctor so I can't diagnose you.
My brother has ADHD, and the medicine doesn't make your metabolism faster.

Riddalon and a lot of other medications for ADD and ADHD make you not so hungary. I know a lot of people that don't like to eat when on the medication and that's how they lost all the weight. My brothers medicine isn't that bad, but a lot of medications that help with ADD and ADHD just make you not hungary.

If you want to lose weight do it the old fashion way, diet and excercise, not by using drugs (prescription or not)
