I hate computers!

Question Posted Thursday April 21 2005, 9:37 pm

Alright, so, my computer sucks. Apparently it's a good computer, but we always have problems with it. For the last few months it's been surprisingly fine. But recently, it starts shutting down with no warning or anything. I haven't noticed a pattern in things that I'm doing when it shuts down, and it's really becoming an inconveinance(sp?). We don't have a anti-virus program, which, I know is incredibly stupid. When I try to start the computer back up, it sounds like a dead engine trying to start up in the tower, but nothing works. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Thanks!

Hmm, this sounds like either
1. The dead engine sound could be your hard drive whackin out on you, which is bad.
or
2. A virus problem. Get a sweeper for virus's and get a sweeper for adware/spyware.

I suppose the best answer would be based on what exactly you mean by a "dead engine" sound.

If you mean tink-tink-tink-clunk, that would be the hard drive.

If it is more of a high growling noise, that could be the CPU fan, case fan or power supply fan. All of these are notorious for failure.

Overheating a computer's CPU even once can leave it in need of repair.

Time to take this one to the shop and see what's what.

Make sure they provide your old parts and a reasonable explaination of the problem. That way they don't sell you things you don't need.

DangerNerd.

P.S. Mind if I add this question to my blog?

*sigh* a virus cannot affect the hardware of a computer. Not that anti-virus software isn't a good thing to have on a windows computer, but it's not like a virus can kill your power supply or something.

My first guess is that the computer has overheated and has shut itself down for a while to cool off. Make sure the fans are working, and possibly look into getting another one installed. They are cheap. They may also just be really dirty; canned air to squirt them out might help.

When the computer does turn on, check to see if you can feel the fans. Then when it doesn't turn on, see if you can feel the fans. If the fans turn on, but the computer doesn't, you can rule out the power supply (which is my second guess).

Good Luck.

yeah its pretty stupid not to have an anti virus program, stuff like this happens. go to a friends computer, download an antivirus program (www.downloads.com) and save it to a cd and install it on your computer and run it. if the computer seems beyond repair you need to pop in the system restore disk taht came with your computer. that will erase everything and make your computer like the day you got it. the first you will want to do is download and install an antivirus program, even if its just a free trial. i use both mcafee and norton, as well as ad-aware and spybot to get rid of spyware. you can find all of these for free using google.

I think it actually IS a virus. An elderly woman across the street from me had the same problem on her machine. You need to get some kind of virus and spyware remover. But I would NOT recommend anything you have to pay for. A few of those would be AVG, Ad-aware, and Spy-bot S&D. But I have the most experience from Ad-Aware. It looks like AVG is what you need. And no it's not stupid to not have anti-virus software; I have heard that the companies that make the software also make the viruses...so, stay away from things like norton and mcaffee. Anyway, yeah, I think what you have is a virus and you need to get AVG or somthing to remove it. If it's not a virus then you have an even bigger problem...not going there.

The only thing that's wrong with it is what you have already pretty much said. Your computer has a virus pretty much. Call up the line for you computer company and ask them how to clear the computer from a certain date. I've gotten viruses before and it's really helpful. You'll lose all the things that you've saved since you've started having problems but it's worth it.
