Is there an answer? How many licks DOES it take to get to the center of the tootsie pop??

Question Posted Thursday June 25 2009, 11:00 pm

"How many licks DOES it take to get to the center of the tootsie pop??"

Seems like all my friends are saying that lately, and I started wondering: Has anyone figured it out? Wish I was kidding, but I really want to know How many licks DOES it take to get to the center of the tootsie pop?!

I have tried doing it, but I never ever make it. Has anyone? Ever?

Driving me friggin insane!

Well, obviously it's different for everyone. Different saliva amounts, tongue size, pressure, temperature, area of tongue used, etc. But I did a project like this in 8th grade, I think, and it took about 1400 licks to get to the center!

If you want to try, just lick in the same place the entire time, and keep a tally chart. Make a dash for every five or ten licks so you can keep track if you feel like you need to stop :].

Also, make sure you pick a flavor you really like! You should try it some time, it's fun and interesting to be able to answer. [;

I had a friend post a bulletin about this on MySpace saying his little brother took the time to count. His brother said it took about 1100-1200 licks.

But, like Jack & the other person below me have said, the world may never know & that everyone's tongue is different, so the results will always vary.

"

A: No thanks to that animated owl and his woeful lack of willpower, this question has plagued the American public ever since the commercial first aired in 1970. Fortunately, there have been plenty of noble efforts to get to the bottom (or center, as the case may be) of it all.

Unfortunately, the answer depends on who you ask. A group of students at Swarthmore Junior High conducted an extensive study on the subject and concluded that getting to the center of a Tootsie Pop took a statistical average of 144 licks. However, the more ambitious and distrusting engineering students at Purdue University chose instead to rely on a “licking machine” modeled after the human tongue for their results. The Boilermakers found it took an average of 364 licks. And while other studies have been done, all the results vary. So in the end, only one thing is certain: The world may never know."
