I am a freshman in high school and i recently lost my virginity and i know to use protection but my question is can you only get pregnant when you are on your period? or only when u are not?

Yes, you can, in either case. Case in point, a former teacher of mine told a story about how her own parents had a doctor work out for them what time during her (cycle? I don't know the correct term) she was least likely to get pregrant. Some years later, my teacher was one of six children of theirs.
