Cracking knuckles

Question Posted Saturday February 26 2005, 8:38 pm

I wasn't completley sure what category this goes under, so I took a guess. My dad always tells me not to pop/crack my knuckles. And he always yells at me when I do. Is there a certain reason why you shouldn't? I heard you can get arthritis from it, I heard that your fingers will get bigger, and I've also heard that nothing will happen. So like why shouldn't I be cracking my knuckles? Can it really do that much damage?

I have have heard that cracking your knuckles does create athritis, and that ur knuckles become enlarged. It is a very unhealthy habbit, But i am not sure if it has been proven. Not everybody has the same outcomes, tho, either. Cracking ur knuckles is just releasing axcess air in your knuckles. You are just popping your air pockets. so i really would worry about it. Hope i helped.

trust me, nothing will happen by cracking your knuckles, no matter what anyone else says. it's just some dumb urban myth or something, and the only damage it can possibly do is really, REALLY annoy someone, but that's pretty much it.TRUST ME, I HAPPEN TO KNOW FOR A FACT THAT NOTHING WILL HAPPEN!

My mom is a nurse and says that can happen, btu I do it anyway. I think it just gets on people's nerves. It used to mine. I like being defiant, so next time he says that I would respond, "I gues I'll just haqve to take that chance." And continue to crack them. Besides, I have a short attention span and am easily bored. When I don't have pockets, I just stand there, basically strangling my fingers. I just can't stop. I also get frustrated when I don't have a pencil in my hand.

Karen answered Saturday February 26 2005, 8:48 pm:
If you crack your knuckles for a long period of time, you will eventually get arthritis and your fingers will get bigger. So that is true and it can really happen. The reason why you crack your knuckles is because there is air inbetween your joints in your fingers so you "pop" that when ever you crack your knuckles and it's a bad thing to do if you do it every day. It's alright if you crack your knuckles once in a while but you should really stop because you will eventually get arthritis if you don't stop.

I'm pretty sure you can get arthritis from it.I'm not so sure about your knuckles getting bigger. You should stop cracking your knuckles. Its hard to stop things that your used to.I pick my fingernails like all the time and my mom and dad always yell at me too.If i have the urge to do it i sometimes doodle or something it helps me sometimes. But you should stop because arthritis sucks! My mom has it and it turns your knuckles like red and circle like.So it might be better to stop.

MummuM answered Saturday February 26 2005, 8:47 pm:
Yes, it is bad to crack your knuckles. But it also depends on how many times a day you actually crack them. If it's a lot, you'll probably end up having sore hands/swollen knuckles when you get older. If it's not really a "habbit" and you do it every so often, nothing bad should come out of this.

No, nothing can happen to your hands from cracking your knuckles. I also do that and i asked my doctor and she said it is just a bad habbit for some people. The only bad thing about cracking your knuckles is that it sounds gross.

People do it every so often just don't make a big habit of it. Yes, it's tru you can get arthritus and it'll make your nucklets REALLY big. Not right away, but when you get older. That won't be very pretty or helpful.

Keep your knuckles pretty, x0x Jordy|♥

P.S. I know someone who has that problem and her kuckles are huge and he has arthritus so cant grasp anything well.. it is ture.

dear knuckles,

you're not going to get arthritis from it but you have a pretty good chance of having your knuckles become swollen. yes it will do a lot of damage because when you get older your fingers will be so swollen that you won't be able to move them. beleive me- i do research! well unless you'd like a hand the size of an elephants foot i suggest you stop the habbit! <3
