Well, when I had a root canal this summer they used laughing gas first, then an anesthetic (or something like that x.x) on me. Laughing gas basically just makes you drowsy and unalert to your surroundings. When I was on it I got really sleepy and drowsy and the dentist's voice was really distorted. Lol, it was kinda funny. Don't worry, it won't hurt while he's performing the root canal. Just make sure you take your medicine after the proceedure and make sure you swish some salt water in your mouth a few times a day to keep it clean!

it doesnt hurt, at least the laughing gas. it just totally numbs your mouth. its kind of hard to explain but like when you go to drink a glass of water, you cant tell if the glass is at your mouth cuz you cant feel it, so you spill. dont worry about it

I'm pretty sure that they don't give you laughing gas any more...they usually use numbing injections.
When I had my teeth out, I had numbing injections...they hurt (kind of scratch) a little, but it's honestly nothing too bad, and I'm such a wimp :) If you're worried about numbing injections, put some bonjela (weak numbing jelly stuff) on your gums around the tooth before hand or ask them for numbing gel when you get there - that's what I did and it really stopped the injections hurting!!
Hmm...I don't know what a root canal feels like, but I have heard that it's less painful afterwards than it is before when you need it done...
Either way, take some paracetamol or nurofen with you because after about half an hour, numbing injections and laughing gas wear off and it may start to hurt.
Good luck and don't worry!!
Blessed Be,

When you're in the process of root canal and you have laughing gas, you'll probably feel the dentist moving around in your mouth but there will be no pain. After everything is set and done, you might not be able to eat hard or solid foods for a few days depending on how many teeth you get pulled. There'd going to be a space where your tooth was just like when you use to have your baby teeth fall out. After about 3 days, you should be able to eat solid foods again and it will seem like the whole thing never happened. Sorry to have to tell you about the pain but I dont want you to have to go there and be in shock when you can only eat soup, bananas, applesauce and yogurt. Anything else you can think of that is soft would be good too and I suggest you pick some soft foods up from the supermarket before the root canal so you're ready.
Good luck!
Jacki

I'm sorry to say but root canals are painful. I haven't had any but my father had to have several. The "laughing gas" is Nitrous Oxide, which is an anesthetic (although by itself is a weak anesthetic). The reason why its called laughing gas is that it will allow you to stay conscious although a bit drowsy and high with a warm feeling. It became popular in the rave scene (you'll see kids sucking it in from balloons).

However Nitrous Oxide in combination with other local anesthetics (stuff they inject directly into your jaw) is a very effective to reduce pain.(it has to do with induction and other physiologic mech, which i know the idea of but not the whole physiology of it- that's what anesthesiologists are for). So you shouldn't feel much during the procedure (they don't want to put you under completely b/c it just costs more and has more complications.

When it does wear off though you will feel a bit of pain, but that's why they usually give you a cool pain killer to take home with you (Vicodin or Percocet) to help.

Best of luck,
Arun

This stuff is great.

We only get it in the UK if we go private and pay a fortune to have our dental work done. Or are having a baby.

It's really good, makes you fell completely relaxed and drowsy and warm.

You won't feel a thing if they are using laughing gas on you.

Don't be scared, the dentist is not there to hurt you, he will fill your tooth whilst you are numb and drowsy from the gas.

Just make sure you have someone with you when you go as if you take too much of the gas it can make you a little wobbly on your feet!!!

Hope it goes well!!

well i never had a root canal taken out b4 but the laughing gas is just to make the pain go away. It kinda feels refreshing when they use the gas, you just sorta drift away. Prbably more a pain reliever.
Good Luck!
