An antacid is, chemically speaking, a base. It neutralizes the excess acids in your GI tract. They work on very simple principals. Some of these can make you a little gassy, but often have a small amount of simethicone in them to keep that form occurring. Chewable TUMS aren't bad - a little chalky, but they at least have some fruity flavor to them.

Heartburn medications like Pepcid and the like are different. They act by keeping the stomach from producing as much acid. These are "real" drugs, as opposed to antacids.

An antacid basically stops/helps you from/with having Acid Reflux or heartburn or a nausiated feeling in your tummy after you eat certain foods. For minor feelings of heartburn after you eat (burping up the food you eat a lot) you may want to try Tums or Rolaids. They are both over the country. Those can't hurt ya at all even if you don't REALLY need 'em, so if you think you may just try one of those because they are pretty riskfree.
If you believe you have Acid Reflux disease or an unequal amount of acid in your stomach you may want to consult with a doctor. Or, if you KNOW you have ARD you may want to try Prilosec OTC. It use to be a perscription and now it is an over the country thing they recommend you to take for liek 2 weeks.
If you consult your doctor and your stomach produces abnormal amounsts of acid (like me) or you have serious ARD then you may want to get a perscription for Prevacid. It helps so much. Before I went on the medication I was always nausiated and miserable. Now I can eat anything and I'm never nausiated.

If you seem to have stomach issues, see a Dr. or just start off with the Tums. If you need more info let me know. :)
