So many people think it's all about eating steak and chicken. Most of the Atkins diet consists of vegetables. It is probably true that men are not affected as badly by a high protein diet as women because their BMI is lower and they have more lean muscle. The truth is, the healthiest thing you can do is cut out crap, eat lots of fruit and vegetable, and drink plenty of water. There, I just invented a new fad diet. But Atkins is not a very healthy diet...my aunt went on it and she hated it! I know everyone says this but excercising and drinking lots of water will make you muscle....no fat! selectopaque answered Tuesday September 14 2004, 9:05 am: Sweet, I just started a Nutrition class and the atkins diet has come up a lot.
The professor is, of course, a Nutritionist, and she just told us that it is not nearly as harmful to your health as all the nutritionist thought. But you still have to do it correctly, that means -stay on a LOW carb diet, instead of a no carb diet. Getting rid of carbs completely will over-load your body with protein and you will not be able to break down the protein, because the carbs give your body the energy to break the protein down. If you can't break down the protein, then you can't pee... and other adverse effects.
The way the atkins diet works is because it takes more energy for your body to break down protein, as opposed to carbs. With a high protein diet you get a higher Meal Induced Thermogenisis (MTI), or, more heat produced by your body after you eat a lot of protein enriched food.
Basically the atkins diet tricks your body into breaking down the extra fat storage in your body and flushing it out of your body. Since it doesn't have the carbs to break down, your body goes for the fat storage.
That being said, I know there are differences between males and females, and the hormones could make a difference when it comes to the atkins diet. But we haven't gotten that far in the class yet.
