If you TAke It DuRIng YOur PErIod - you will take the first active pill of the first pack during the first 24 hours of your period. You will be protected from pregnancy immediately and protection will continue as long as the Pill is taken on schedule. If you are a "Sunday starter," you will take the first active pill of the first pack on the Sunday after your period starts — even if you are still bleeding. If your period begins on Sunday, start the pack that same day.
IF YOu TakE iT ON a SunDay YOu should use another method of birth control during vaginal intercourse during the first week of pill use — any time from the Sunday you start your first pack until the next Sunday. Pill protection will begin after seven days and continues as long as the Pill is taken on schedule.
Siren_Cytherea answered Wednesday August 25 2004, 1:58 pm: You're supposed to start it at the end of a period, then take it through the next one. So essentially, a month or one 28-day cycle.
After that, it's in effect, usually.
Hope this helped!

selectopaque answered Wednesday August 25 2004, 1:58 am: It is different with each kind of birth control. The most common, "the pill" or Ortho Tri Cyclen, or simply, Tri Cyclen, takes a month to start to work.
I take the three month shot, or Deprovera, and I believe I had to wait the entire three months before it became effective.
