i`m completely into music [i play violin] and i love it s0o0o0o much! i`ve been playing classical and fiddle/improv for almost 7 years. my mom and classical teacher want me to continue with classical and do that as mmy career and take it more seriously. my improv and fiddle teachers want me to take classical until college but then go into fiddle and improvisation. i`m not sure how to handle all this cause i really am starting to dislike a lot of classical music that my teacher wants for me. but she is a great person and player [carnegie hall and debut at age 10!!!!!!] i think maybe i should try some new classical crap but i`m not sure if this will fix my problem..
thankssss i rate*-- xoxox

Its hard to go through your life doing something you dont wanna do. If you dont wanna do classical music, then tell them that you dont want to. It will be easier on you if you start doing pieces that you enjoy. Take this advice from a fellow orchestra player ((I play the viola. Not the violin, but, close enough!))
chaos answered Tuesday July 27 2004, 10:22 am: It is good to have both of these genres under your hat because it makes you more marketable. Talk to your teacher about how you are feeling. There is a point in your career where you may have to choose. There is probably a lot more opportunity to earn prizes and scholarships with the classical bend, but the improv would be more useful in a band situation. It is not up to me to make your decision, but you won't have to give up improv forever. They are just trying to focus you into the best opportunity that they know. I hope to see you on my stage (ok I don't own it, I just work here). [ chaos's advice column | Ask chaos A Question ]
PympintheATL answered Tuesday July 27 2004, 12:18 am: Wow, you sound really good. I just recently went to Carnegie. I was there in March for the national middle school chorus. If you made it there when you were ten, you've got to keep this up. Continue with the music, keep some good grades, and you'll have a scholarship. Keep on rolling! Check my column for my screen name. Peace up, a-town down. [ PympintheATL's advice column | Ask PympintheATL A Question ]

MFS answered Monday July 26 2004, 11:58 pm: check out the likes of Jean Luc Ponty or any of the other Jazz violinists... seriously - being able to play in many different styles is always a good thing - getting better in one makes you better in the others.
