Question Posted Wednesday July 21 2004, 6:13 pm

my best friend is going thru depression. i have gone thru it be4 and so has she, so she knows how it is. shes seen a counselor and now she doesnt ne more because she got better and she didnt listen to one anyway. she has very low self esteem and says that she wants to be skinny and lose weight becuz i am "wicked skinny" and so isnt her twin sister and she wants to lose weight like we did. she cuts herself and is always really quiet..not normal for her. i talk to her alot about these things but i really want her to be ok..and go back to normal. she hardly eats too...ive had an eating disorder be4 and she saw it "work" for me so she is doing it too. please dont say get her proffesional help...i just need a way to help her.

Since you are her best friend, your opinion is probably most important to her. Tell her she's beautiful, and that she doesn't need to lose weight, and if she does, then don't go ona crash diet, and tell her you'll do it with her. (if you do it with her, make sure you are doing worse, but not gaining weight) make sure she knows that you and all of her friends accept her for who she is. Tell her she shouldn't cut herself because you care too much about her and you don't want anything to happen to her. Since you have been through depresion too, you know how much a compliment means. Tell her this stuff and have her other friends tell her how much she is appreciated, then she may rethink the cutting and eating disorder thing.

you need to tell her that she is scaring you. my best friend went thro the same thing. just ask her why she is doing it. and just express that you'll be there for her and that she could seriously hurt herself. if you want any more help just let me know. girdy_goo15
