For most girls, using a tampon is a little scary at first because it involves a part of the body that may be unfamiliar to you. But don't worry. With patience and practice, you'll become more comfortable with it.
1. Get Ready
- Wash your hands
- Remove outer wrapper of the tampon
- Hold the applicator tube with your thumb and middle finger on the grip, and your pointer finger on the end.
- With your other hand, find the opening of your vagina. This is just below your urethra, where your urine is excreted.
- Use your fingers to spread apart your vagina opening.
2. Insert
- Insert the tip of the applicator, aiming at a slight angle toward your back.
- Relax your muscles.
- Guide the applicator into your vagina until your thumb and middle fingers are just about touching your vaginal opening.
- Now, using your index finger, push the inner tube of the applicator. This will push the tampon all the way up into your vagina.
- Pull the applicator out and THROW IT AWAY (like you would a pad. it's probably not best to flush it, even if it is cardboard. nobody wants to use a plunger on a toilet clogged with a tampon applicator. ^_^)
3. Check Fit
- The string of the tampon should now hang down between your thighs. If the tampon is in correctly, you won't be able to feel it. If you do, don't worry.
- If it feels uncomfortable, it may be in crooked or may not be in far enough. Use your finger to push it up farther, or pull it out and start over with a new tampon.
- Wash your hands and be on your way! ^_^
The first time you use a tampon, you might want to check for leakage about every hour or so to check your flow. If you see leakage, that's a good sign to remove the tampon and switch to another. Here's how to remove it:
4. Removal
- When it's time to take out the tampon, relax your muscles and pull down on the string. The tampon will slide out of your vagina.
- Either flush the tampon down the toilet (ONLY if it's not a jumbo tampon. ^_^) or wrap it in toilet paper and throw it out.
- Wash your hands and either insert another tampon or use a pad.
It gets easier with practice. Also, don't forget to read the box for instructions.
Remember: A lot of girls whose hymens haven't broken yet are subject to some pain while inserting a tampon (or having sex, whichever comes first) the first time.

Try tampax pearl [[ or whatever other brand you want to try, that's just *my* preference ]] in the smallest size at first, because they'll be easier to use .. they come with instructions in the box, and from what I remember, they're usually pretty easy to follow :o) ..
FrEe2bMe answered Monday June 28 2004, 6:23 pm: Hey hun! Don't worry..a few years ago I was just like you! It really is no big deal at all. First of all you need to get the right kind of tampon. I would suggest Playtex Gentle Glide (platic applicator) (unscented) SLIM FITS..You don't wanna hurt your you know! the first time so slim fit will suffice...but if you flow is heavier then you may want to wear a pad with it or change them move frequently and then slowly work your way up to the absorbancy that good for you..what you wanna do it take the applicator (with tampon in it) and kind of at a slant slide it up your hole..if your flow is pretty flowy it'll slide right up there with no problem go as far up as you can like usually to wear the rim is and push in the other part..then pull the applicator out and throw it away. to take out the tampon (make sure it is full otherwise it hurts!!) and gently tug on the string it'll pull right out..you CAN flush tha down the toilet but its not really good for home toilets..just relax!!! and if you still need help feel free to ask..once you get the hang of it though, it'll be a peice of cake! good luck!! :) [ FrEe2bMe's advice column | Ask FrEe2bMe A Question ]
