What does 512k amount to in bytes? I need to know for a website design.

Try this site. All you do is type in the number of bytes and it does all the math for you. Really handy

typically, 1k is 1000...
but because computers are based on binary, the conversion is actually 1024 bytes per 1 kbyte.
Thus, 512k is 524288 bytes.
Same deal with hard drives: 1G is 1024M, which is 1024K, which is 1024 bytes.

I dunno, but a Javascript I've heard of can help you. Look on javascripts.com and other Java websites. I used it one time but can remember exactly where I got it. Help this helps.

well, K means kilo bytes, and if I remember correctly kilo is 1000 so I would guess 5120.
