As the question says. :) Not to toot my own horn or anything like that, but I consider myself a good writer, as do my teachers. Essays, articles, parodies and reports get consistently excellent marks. However, I've desired to write creative stories, specifically fanfiction, for a long time, but I'm having trouble writing anything. Last time I've written fanfic was at 14; now I'm 17, and I'm afraid I've lost any spontaneity and skill I might've had. I don't believe imagination to be the problem, but I have trouble writing them out onto paper/computer, and I also have the problem of being too self-critical, so I'm constantly editing and deleting things (which doesn't do much for progress!). Does anybody have any suggestions to help?
GuitarDude answered Saturday July 3 2004, 5:08 pm: Well, what I would suggest is to take a piece of paper/document on the computer and write ideas that come to you. After you get a good list going, stop. A few days later, look at the list, and pick out a topic/idea/etc. that you like. Then, write it out. Doesn't matter if it's horrible or if it's award-winning, just write it out. After that, stop. A few days later, go back to it, and try to make it better. Don't delete it or anything, just try to make it a better story in any ways you think you can. Do that a few times, and eventually you'll have a story.
If that fails, go back to the list and pick something else. And if that fails, walk around with a notepad and write down various ideas you come up with when looking at things. Eventually, you'll find a very good idea that you can work with.
If you're doing fan-fiction, pick your favorite part/episode/scene from whatever you're writing a fan-fiction about. Embellish on it, play with the idea, see how that works.
One final idea is to do what I call a "paragraph story." What you do is condense any idea you have to a standard paragraph (between 3 and 8 sentences). This helps weed out any extra parts that you might not like later on. After you've condensed it, take out another sheet of paper/document and from that paragraph write a story. Add anything you want to the story, it's just a starting point. [ GuitarDude's advice column | Ask GuitarDude A Question ]
xokristabelle answered Saturday May 29 2004, 3:06 pm: The best way to write that kind of things is to go on role-playing boards. Neopets.com (a virtual pet site) has great rp boards! YOu can use my old account, username dolphingirl_kmn_1990 and password: passwordneopetshappy (just paste and don't worry if it doesnt all show up). Click on boards on the yellow sidebar, then click role playing, then start your own topic! Start with a character description and make sure the subject is specific. Every time you fill up a page, copy and paste the whole thing into wordpad. Find a spot for a good ending. Now get rid of all the signatures, pictures, etc. and edit it so its gramatically correct and spelled right. Fix it up to make it look like a story, divide it into chapters, add the ending, and save. repeat this a couple of times until you find something you like. good luck! Answer a challange. I'm not quite sure where you find these, but they are sometimes hanging around on mediaminer.org.
Read other fanfics to get inspired. After reading a lot of fanfics, you may get ideas, or just get really determined to write something. You can find good fanfics on the internet and mediaminer.org and fanfiction.net.

Whats up?Well trust me I know the feeling of being stuck in a rut, especially the rut you are in. I used yo write tons of Fanfiction when I was 14( I'm a male) just to get my creative juices flowing. And like you I took a break and I got back into it in a sad way (I watched a few of the Lizzie McGuire Espisodes) when I finished I wrote my own Episode with what I would want to see happen. Thats how I got back into it, and now its easy to write whatever I please. Also the problem with you is it seems as if you are off direction, like you know what you want to write about you just can't seem to get the "work" to flow the way you want to. The best way to get your creativety back is pick a TV show (any one). Then add yourself into the show, and treat it like a story.
DruidX answered Monday April 26 2004, 6:40 am: Have you tryed not writting fan fic? And have you tryed wandering somewhere to get inspiered? I Doubt this will have you suddenly writing novels but my best advice is, go somewhere and people watch. Make up little paraphraphs about people.
As for the being self critical, just try really hard to write something short without edititing anything, then tell yourself 'once I have finished, I can edit it'.
