OK, i just got my first period today. Unfortunately, my mom is on vacation so I have no clue what to do. Am I supposed to wear a pad/tampon while I sleep? How often should i change them? THank you so much for your help!

Well first of all don't us a tampoon your not old enought wait for about 6 months, and change your pad often as needed like once you see that its holding to much. Most females have to do it 2-3 times a day. Yes some women do have to slepp with a tampoon but right now wait for a while, because if you leave it in to long bad things can happen.

U will be mroe responsible, cuz some times i 4get imw earing pads, because ud ont have to chnage thme as much as u do tampons, My flow isnt that much its very light so I only have to change it 2-3 tinmes a day, i chnage it in the mornign befor ei go to school, and befor e lucnh i check it and usually tis fine and thne i chnage it befor ei go to bed, a fresh one 4 bed is good because it wont be all soggy or enything wne u wake up. . because if u flow alot mroe u migh need o chnage it more than 3 times i dont knw exactly. . start with the medium or large size. . and check how much u flow* I use regular. . ok well hope all goes well. . !!!

Wear pads at night and in the day until you get comfortable with them. Somewhere around half a year I became comfortable enough to wear tampons. You'll be fine. Drink tea if you get cramps or use a heating pad. Definately tell whoever is home though. And tell your mom immediately when she gets home. Good luck!

i just got my period this year, an fortuanately, mum was home. phew! anyhoo, i don't wanna even try tampons, i'm sticking with the pads, but it depends what your comfortable with. i agree with everyone else, go for the pads at night, they tend to absorb more. also, go for the biggest size possible at the beginning, so you can work out how heavy the flow is - it's better to be safe than sorry. at school, if you don't have a spare pad or whatever, toilet paper or tissues will last you til you get home. um, also, i tend to put used pads in a bag or wrap them in loo paper before binning them. never flush them down the toilet!! it gets embarrassing explaining to the plumber... good luck!!

I'd like to add a bit of advice to what's already been said: if you get stains on anything, rinse in cold water before you put it though the wash - the stains should just come out. If you wash it in hot water, the stains will... stain.

change them about every 4-6 hours, or as needed.
never leave a tampon in for longer than 8 hours, because there's a small chance you could get toxic shock syndrome (an unfriendly disease).
never ever sleep in a tampon, because if you're so young you just got your first period, i'm hoping you get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.
finally, always sleep in a pad -- if you don't, your sheets and underwear will be wrecked.

Don't wear tampons in bed. That's how some people get TSS. Plus after a while, it would leak and get all over your sheets, and that's something not fun to deal with when mom's away.

Pads are better to wear while sleeping. To avoid the "run off" that stains clothes and sheets, fold a few squares of toilet paper and put them in your underwear, right at the back of your pad. If you wake up and some things are stained, get some Shout and spray it on whatever got bloody. Leave the item sit for a while, and then wash it. The stains should come right out, so don't freak out about it.

You'll know when to change them, because you'll get an uncomfortable sensation that whatever you're using has totally been absorbed. It's like a built in sense of paranoia for females. DON'T FLUSH PADS IN THE TOILET. They'll clog it and it'll overflow. Some tampons are ok to flush but I never do because I'm paranoid. Some tampon applicators are also ok to flush but check the wrapper before you do so.

If you get cramps, Midol, Pamprin, and Advil work very well. It's best not to freak out about anything until your mom gets home. If you have any aunts or grandmothers close by, you can always call them for help. Good luck to you!
