Today I was named captain of my school's cheerleading squad, which is really good until I realized that I have no idea what I am doing. This is the first time my school has had a real squad and if I mess it up they might not have it again. Someone suggested renting a video on cheering, does anyone else have ideas?

Deanimal answered Thursday April 22 2004, 1:18 am: A good squad has:
*A dance or two
*Many cheers for different occaisions
*Chants and sidelines
*Stunts
*Uniforms
*Fun
Don't worry about it too much, and have fun. A video would actually be a good idea. Or ask a cheerleader to help. They're everywhere. Like a friends sister or an adult who used to be one. [ Deanimal's advice column | Ask Deanimal A Question ]
jbdreamer answered Wednesday April 21 2004, 1:28 pm: Don't put so much pressure on yourself. Don't be scared if you mess up, you can't be perfect, nobody can. You were named captain for a reason, so be who you are. Don't be scared, be confident, the team is following your lead! [ jbdreamer's advice column | Ask jbdreamer A Question ]
evilgogeta answered Wednesday April 21 2004, 3:06 am: Ask people you know who are cheerleaders. Ask the teachers in your school. Sit the squad down and see what they think. It sounds like you're determined not to screw up. Therefore you won't screw up. [ evilgogeta's advice column | Ask evilgogeta A Question ]
notnormal answered Tuesday April 20 2004, 10:31 pm: I would ask for advice from someone who knows what is involved in being a cheerleading squad captain. Start with your teachers and coaches, then you might look outside of your school, maybe call another school that does have a real squad and ask them if they would be willing to give you some advice.
Since your school has not had a squad before, I don't think it would be fair to hold you responsible for "messing up." You are doing this by yourself. The fact that you are worrying about doing a good job means you probably will do well. [ notnormal's advice column | Ask notnormal A Question ]
Cspinoza1 answered Tuesday April 20 2004, 8:34 pm: Dear Cheerleading,
They picked you for a reason, you have fire, drive, motivation, passion, and they must feel you are a leader even if you feel you aren't any of the above. Congrats from becoming head cheerleader is where I will begin. Well renting a video will not help you because those are only sugar coated by hollywood so don't do that. Do what comes natural hold practices, hold cheerleading meeting so you and the squad can learn each others potential, learn everyone and their strengths for that will come in handy. You have seen the videos and watched real cheerleaders somewhere well now its time to pay attention and if you watch a movie only watch their performances to become creative and talk with the couch. Just do what comes from the heart and pass that on..
GC_rox_my_sox answered Tuesday April 20 2004, 8:29 pm: I heard that those CHEER videos are good (That's the title of them). I'm not sure where you live, but here in New York they have commercials for them a lot, and you can call in to order. You might be able to find them in stores though. And they come with free pom poms, what fun! [ GC_rox_my_sox's advice column | Ask GC_rox_my_sox A Question ]
kylemonticone8 answered Tuesday April 20 2004, 8:04 pm: What I think is who cares if you mess up, you can keep trying and trying till you get better at it if the principal has a problem with your squad he has a problem with his or herself.
