OneMan answered Thursday December 4 2003, 6:00 pm: Neither, really. Sore muscles are caused aby a buildup of what's called lactic acid. When the muscles are worked more than they're accustomed to, the body produces lactic acid as a by-product. An overabundance can be the cause of alot of symptoms such as : Soreness, cramp ( charly-horses ) and pretty much anything else disagreeable associated with exercise. But fear not. An excellent remedy is to take time off between work outs and let the muscles repair themselves. But, as far as ice or heat. Whichever brings you the most comfort at the time. Go for it. My friend's mom works in Emergency and this is what she said to me at the competition: Ice on for 15, off for 15, one for 15etc.. when you get back to your hotel, ice on for 15 min, in the hut tub for 10 minutes nothing for 5, ice on for 15 etc...Hope that helps! sourlime answered Sunday October 19 2003, 4:43 pm: If you want to relax, heat's the best.
You don't want to use heat if you might have internal (or external) bleeding (such as a bruise). Heat increases blood flow, so it will make any injury worse.
You don't want to use ice if you might have pulled a muscle. Ice decreases mobility, so it will make it harder to work the muscle.
Otherwise, you can use whatever feels best. Depending on the injury, I sometimes heat it before exercise, and then ice it after. The heat makes it more mobile and less likely to get hurt, and the ice just feels good afterwards. [ sourlime's advice column | Ask sourlime A Question ]

By heat, you should be working the area which is sore. If you are sore because you have not worked the muscles in a while, then you just need to work them more. You might find that after a few minutes of a minor workout your muscles will feel better.
