I'm surrounded by idiots. My chemistry teacher has to spend

Question Posted Sunday October 12 2003, 10:11 am

I'm surrounded by idiots. My chemistry teacher has to spend whole classes explaining concepts over and over. How do I deal with people who are thick as a brick when I just want to get a good grade in chem?

I agree with previous answers that an AP or Honors class might be appropriate. If not, well... try to find something to do during class. Work on homework for that class, read ahead in the book or re-read something that you didn't quite understand. Don't fail to be visible though. Answer questions whenever you get a chance to, ask questions whenever you're confused or just curious. If you can show the teacher that you're interested and intelligent then you'll more than likely be granted a bit of leeway when it comes time to deal with the stupider members of your class.

Ultimately though, it's just a failing of the public school system. Teachers are forced to teach to the lowest common denominator and often it turns out to be pretty low. I and every other person with an IQ over room temperature feels for you.

Oh, and try not to put too little effort into it. Sure you might be able to breeze through classes now, but you'll eventually reach a point in college or whereever when you really need to know how to study well and like most of us who had it easy in the past it becomes rather hard to start learning these things this late in the game.

It depends. If, by getting a "good grade", you mean cover all the subjects in chem, the I would agree with most people here and suggest trying to transfer. But if you're not, and just don't want to fail the tests, I would pay attention until you've learned the new topic, then do one of the following:
1.Doodle.
2.Write a novel. Or several.
3.Do other homework (yes, I know it's already been said.)
4.Sleep. (you may want to pretend to be looking at your text book, with your head in your hands for this one. Putting your head right on the table is a bit obvious)
5.Daydream-just zone out entirely.
6. If your school has those weird tiles like mine has, count the holes in them.
7.Learn a foreign language. Or several.
8.Play with a toy underneath the table. If you can get one of those calculators with games on it, this is especially good, as you can always turn it off really quickly if someone sees it, and pretend to have been doing something chem-related with this. (I don't know whether you use calculators in chem or not, however-I haven't taken it yet.)

Is there anyway you could get switched into maybe and honors chem class?

A similar situation happened to me last year when I took bio. I was supposed to be in honors bio, but due to scheduling conflicts I had to stay in regular bio, and my class had some pretty dumb people. I know it sucks, but just do the best that you can, and if you need to, go get a chemistry reveiw book and do some studying on your own. That's what got me through bio and got me a 95 on the Regents exam(NY state tests). And good luck with chem, I'm taking it now too.

Hey I recommend talking to your counselor. If they say that you can't be transferred then do homework for other classes in that class. I have a class that is exactly like yours and I sit in the class and do homework for other classes. It gives me something productive to do while the other idiots try to grasp the concept of gravity.

I had the same problem as you did, but it was in basic science in my freshman year! I was so frustrated that I started skipping school because the kids in that class were.. *stupid*. I even had a conferance with a vice pricpal, but all he told me was that I had to stick it out, because transfering me would automatically get me a failing grade.

I freaked out in the class, and from then on everyone thought I was a physco.

If the teacher won't help, nor the admin., take the issue to a counsler. If that doesn't help, and your parents influance don't help.. go to the school board. They're bound to listen.

If all else fails, go to the media! :D

I'm sort of sensitive about this issue because I was so brainless when it came to chem and I was filled with a class of people who would make fun of me the rest of the day if I asked a "stupid" question. Don't bully or intimidate people because they don't know all of the answers when you do. Chem is hard to understand for most people; I congratulate you for grasping it quicker than your peers. Offer to tutor your peers if you want to waste less class time; or sign up for a higher chem course.

You might want to check and see if you can either a)test out of the class, b)work ahead, or c)get transferred to a different class. Sometimes you just need to take the class with a different group of people. Talk to your guidence counselor about your options.
