Why did I choose the username Nyx? Nyx is the ancient goddess of Night in Greek mythology, daughter of Chaos. She is a primal ancestress, and mother of many deities by Her brother Erebus (Darkness). Her children are for the most part dark sorts and include the Moerae (the three Fates), Nemesis (justice and divine retribution), winged Hypnos (Sleep) and His brother Thanatos (Death), Moros (Doom), the Keres, goddesses of violent death, Oizys (Misery), the Hesperides who guarded the golden apples, Deceit, Friendship, Old Age and Eris(Discord).

She was depicted as riding in a chariot, trailing stars and bringing the night, and accompaied by Her sons Hypnos and Thanatos. She could be helpful or harmful to mankind, bringing either sleep or death. Nyx had prophetic powers, and gave them to oracles from a cave. She was older and more powerful than Zeus, who deferred to Her wishes.

Why do people think that we are like Satanic and that we're like completly evil..me and you both know that Wicca is not at all even close to that

Well... to tell the truth, many people are ignorant when it comes to Wicca. There is a large amoung of misinformation floating around about Wicca(for example, that we worship the devil, or that we eat babies). These erroneous ideas are fueled by lurid movies, television, and scandal magazines, and the anti-everything-not-orthodox fanatics. Extremist christians believe this(especially the older ones).

I don't think Wicca will be nationally accepted as a religion any time soon, but I think one day it will. There are far too many ignorant people in the world right now for it to be nationally accepted in the USA. Another issue is that there are so many newer people claiming to be witches because they think it's 'cool', and that all Goths are Wiccan, and that you will be blessed with the ability to turn your worst enemy into a magot. These are the people who know nothing about our faith and walk around saying,"You better shut up or I'll cast a spell on you!" This also gives us real Wiccans a bad name.

The best that we can ever do is try to maturely explain to other people what our religion REALLY is. Wether they choose not to believe us or to, it's up to them... but at least we tried our hardest to inform them of the truth.

I hope that helped. If you have any other Wiccan related questions don't hesitate to ask!

I don't mean to bash the religion, but I'm sick of it. I live in Utah, so I'm surrounded by it. And everyone is always bringing up that the religion should be more a part of the school. Well, I don't believe in any of it. Personally, I think their religion was just founded on Joseph Smith trying to steal other men's wives and get away with it. And they have a class here. How do they get away with having a religiously oriented class in a public school, isn't that infringing on the separation of church and state clause? My question is how do I deal with all of this religion when I don't want it, especially since all the guys that I could date are mormon?

Sweetie... I know EXACTLY how you feel. I used to live in Minnesota, and I'm a Wiccan. I moved to Idaho(near Pocatello, where the percentage rate of Mormons is higher than Salt Lake even!), and I had to deal with all that crap.

How can they get away with offering Mormon Seminary as credits? Because the state government is all mormon as well. Utah and Idaho are the ONLY states that can pull that kind of crap. Here's a little story about my experience in school...

I was told by the Vice-Principal of our 99% Mormon school(who btw wanted to be called Brother Bonnie) to take of my pentacle because 'We dont worship the devil here'. I calmly replied with,"Have you heard of the first amendment? I have the freedom to express myself." He then asked if I heard of seperation-of-church-and-state. I got a little more upset, and told him that he wasn't doing a good job of that, as he offers mormon classes as credits, has a mormon school/church on school grounds, and allowed students to try to convert others in the hallways. He didn't know what to say, but still told me to take off my necklace. So I hottly remarked,"M'kay... well... I'll make a deal with you. I'll take off my necklace, if you take off every CTR ring, and cross necklace in this school." He was so upset, he didn't say anything, and just left. He always managed to steal Wiccan books from my friends(which I let them borrow). And I was constantly called into his office, where he said that he should keep them. I told him he'd need to pay me $30 for the book then. And I explained my friends situation, that there was no homework, and the teacher was at her desk, and there were other students doing non-school related activities as well, and so the book should not have been taken. He always got mad at me... he got his revenge on one of the last days of school by giving me In School Suspension when I skipped on Senior Skip Day. I proudly wore my necklace to graduation to show it off to him.

You can't beat them... trust me, I've tried. But definatly don't join them. If you look hard enough you'll find a guy who isn't Mormon to date.

I give advice on this site, and yes, I'm also a Wiccan, almost on the verge of being an atheist and lately there has been someone harrassing me about my faith, she has left 2 messages so far in my inbox, about God, and I've given her actual proof about why I don't beleive in God like that. What I wanted to know is, have I been the only one getting messages like that? Thanks.

Oh Pumpkin! Walking the path of Wicca is one of the most difficult paths to walk. Wicca is definatly not a religion for anyone, especially with the ridicule many of us face. We need to be strong though. But I just want you to know that you are not the only one who has been harrassed. So don't feel singled out.

I guess the moral of my story is, that you need to keep strong to your beliefs, and don't let anyone sway you. They are just niave and scared... and they don't know anything. The best one can try to do is explain your views to them in a polite and mature manner, and if they resort to petty sqabbling with you just ignore them. Dont give up your beliefs just because some idiot wants to harrass you. If every witch gave up so easily, then there would be none.

Im 15/f. At the moment I'm a Christian, but I'm considering becoming a solitary witch. I've got some questions I'd like to know the answers to from people who actually practise witchcraft and aren't just writing a book

1) Do I need to start praying to the God straight
away?
2) Do I definetely need a separate altar, goddess
shrine, god shrine and lunar shrine because I
only have a small room
3) Does being a witch cost a lot of money?
I'm too young to get a job so I don't have
much money

Don't get me wrong, I really want to become a witch. It's just that the books I'm reading just aren't answering all my questions as they are written by older women dedicated to the craft completely, not a young beginner. Any sources of information or tips on becoming and being a solitary witch are also welcome.

Thanx to the moon and back xxx

Books don't usually answer a lot of questions. I'm glad you sought advice from actual people. Wicca is a nature based life-affirming religiong, just like any other religion. However, the difference in Wicca and say Christiantiy is that Wicca focuses on individualism. You worship how you see fit.

Dont start praying to some God you don't even know or really believe in just yet. Most witches(all true witches) start off for one year and one day reading, learning, and gathering information. They have no altars as of yet, they slowly aquire things for when their year and day of studying are done and they initiate themselves into the faith.

I am a solitary Witch, and have been for 8 years. I started off as eclectic(which means that I just take bits an pieces of each different wiccan denomination and form my own branch), but recently converted to Egyptian Wicca(which means I worship the Egyptian Pantheon and Religion). During your one year and one day, read up as much as you can about Wicca(including the different branches: Dianic, Kitchen Witchcraft, Green Witchcraft, Greek, Egyptian, Celtic, Gardnerian, Pictish, etc)

One book I reccomend to ANY witch(new or old) is Wicca the Complete Craft by D.J. Conway. It's brilliant, and very informative. If you need anyone to talk to further, please please please email me, wether it be any more questions, or if you are recieving harrassment in school for your religious choice. My email address is ViolentSylph@aol.com
