why do dogs lick people?
One thing it seems some of the former answers have missed...the reason it is a sign of affection is because the dog thinks they are grooming you. When my border collie starts licking my hand, she'll systematically cover every inch of my arm until I stop her. It's her way of cleaning me and straightening my hair out...not that I'm especially hairy, but whatever.
You may notice two dogs who like each other taking turns grooming each other. To them, you're one of those dogs.
