Answers That I've Given
Question:
ok, on this game my little sister plays she was having problems. so this is what the game told her to do:
Please make sure that all of your pop up blockers are off. If you have a router,
please make sure that the HTTP port 80 is open and the FTP port 21 is open.
If this still does not fix the problem, contact your internet service provider
to check that your security settings on your modem are not set too 'high'.
I'm pretty sure we don't have a router because i have wireless internet.. so i don't think i do?
i'm guessing that the modem is set to high, or something.
do i have to call my internet? or does anyone know how to do this??
My Answer:
Yes, if you have wireless connection, then you might have a router. 70% of wireless networks have a router.
Check if there's anything between your computer and your modem. Alternatively, on your computer, view the network devices and check for the presence of the device.
To check all of your open ports, go to Run, and type in "cmd" (without the quotes).
In Command Prompt, type in "netstat -an" without the quote.
You should see a list of your open ports there.
But why do you need to have port 80 open anyway? What kind of game is that? Your port 80 SHOULD NOT BE OPEN, unless you are running a webserver; and port 21 is for FTP server. (I don't think you're running a server here so don't open those ports.)
Opening port 80 means opening yourself to more security risks. If this is to run some necessary program or service, then yes, it's all right. But for a game? I don't think it worth the risk. You might want to reconsider this.l
Could you please send me the link to this game that your sister is playing?
Anyway, to open those ports, go to the following website for a detail tutorial:
http://portforward.com/
You need to know what kind of router you have though.
As for your modem, in case you don't have a router, most of the time the default setting is good enough. I suggest that you don't mess with it just because of a game. And yes, this you will have to talk with your ISP, unless you know the link to the setup page (for example: 192.168.0.1), which I don't think you do.
I suggest you to look over your pop-up blockers first.
In Firefox, go to Tool--->Option--->Content
and uncheck "Block pop-up windows"
In Internet Explorer, go to
Tool--->Pop-up Blocker--->turn off pop-up blocker.
You can always enable them back =)
And sorry for not being able to give you a more detail answer. I don't know your OS and what kind of router you have. I don't even know what game that is.
(Rating: 5) thanks, that was really helpful. i'm going to send a message to you, with more information.
