Q: How do you get other teens involved with and committed to service projects? It seems that the majority of teens today can't be bothered or are simply too busy to apply themselves to any cause that isn't within their scope of interests--and most often service and volunteer work comes last on their list of priorities that include socialization, gaming, and/or studying.
Getting teens to spread the word and bring friends to help volunteer helps somewhat, but even then, this strategy doesn't yield great results. Help?

Try a punishment-reward system. Although it's a bit primitive and the teens may hate you for it, it does work. My high school requires ten hours of service every year in order to graduate, and even with the handful of kids that fake it, that's a whole lot of service hours. Colleges love community service, and sometimes you can get scholarship money out of it in the end.
Help them find a type of community service that they enjoy. Some teens prefer serving food, some prefer picking up trash, some prefer repainting houses. Get them to do it with their friends!

Q: Oh my goodness. Somebody please help me. I haven't slept all night because the guilt is killing me!
Okay, so yesterday I went to hang out with my cousin his girlfriend and a friend.
We all went back to my cousin's house and hung out there. Then my friend and I went downstairs to the living area to play the piano a bit.
I pressed on the 1st and left pedal, and since no one ever uses it (grand piano, long and elegant by the way), and i felt the piano move to the side a bit, but i didnt see or hear anything else. neither did my friend.
THEN as we were leaving and i was closing the lid... i saw a long crack on the top, whats itcalled, a cabinet? desktop? not sure
but above the lid.
and it was not there before!
they live in a very nice home and the piano must have cost them thousands.
my aunt and uncle are out of town, and we didnt tell my cousin either, i mean we're not sure that we did it, but im almost positive i did, i dont know i just hadnt noticed the crack...
can it be fixed? the top part (furniture part) replaced? what can i do? i bet its expensive damage.
please help me! im desperate! the guilt the guilt!
sincerely,
heirdusoleil

When you say you "felt the piano move to the side," did you mean the entire piano? Because I know my piano teacher had an old, old piano, and when you pushed the left pedal, all the keys moved to the left. (And when you pushed the right pedal, they all moved to the right.) And it was completely normal. I know you said there was a crack, but does the piano still sound okay? Damage to the wooden exterior is less drastic than damage to the actual instrument.
I'm not sure if it can be fixed, but you should definitely let your aunt and uncle know. Whatever punishment you get (if any, seeing as it was an accident) will probably be less than what you would get if you lied about it. Good luck!

Q: hi im 13 years old and im almost getting to my four pack but i have like fat on the side of me how can i make that go away quickly no matter what the health risk is i need to go to a pool party in a month

Watch what you eat. Whenever you crave junk food, eat fruits or veggies instead. (Strawberries in sugar taste just like candy!) Eat when you're hungry, not when it's lunch or dinner time. Chew slowly, and sip water between bites. Being full depends on both your brain and your stomach; when you chew and swallow food quickly, your brain lets you eat a lot more than you normally would, because it doesn't think you're consuming much food. Chewing slowly and drinking water lets your brain know how much you're eating.
Also: I'm a bit concerned (sorry about the lecturing) about "no matter what the health risk is." Don't forget, health issues will last much longer than the effects of that pool party. Losing weight is (usually) a good thing, but please be smart about it! Don't hurt yourself.

Q: What's the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan? I heard about celebrities being vegans now and I am confused. Is being vegan the same as being a vegetarian or are they completely different?

Given that I'm the fourth person to answer, you probably don't need to hear this, but: vegetarians don't eat animals, and vegans don't eat animals OR animal-related products. That means that vegetarians eat cheese, yogurt, and honey, while vegans do not.

Sleep more! But not too much. How much you need depends on your age and how active you are; find yourself a happy medium. I know that if you sleep too long, you feel tired all day (at least, I do) but if you don't sleep enough, you're obviously tired and unable to function. Good luck!

Hmm. I don't usually have favorite songs/artists/genres but I can list a few of my most recent favorites:
Sunshine, All-American Rejects
Monsoon, Jack Johnson
Here's to the Night, Eve 6
Little Wonders, Rob Thomas
Makes Me Happy, Drake Bell
And a few more because I can't possibly list just five:
I'm So Paid, Akon & Lil Wayne
Thunder, Boys Like Girls
I Melt With You, Jason Mraz (although the original's great, too)
Austin, Blake Shelton
Shattered, OAR
Happy Girl, Martina McBride
One of These Days, Feltbeats
Wonderwall, Oasis
Chase This Light, Jimmy Eat World
Many the Miles, Sara Bareilles

Q: I've been on Advicenators for a few years, on and off, and this hasn't been a problem so far.
I received a very hurtful feedback to a question that I tried my darndest to answer well! I know we can file a report, but it wasn't exactly hateful. The person who wrote it was obviously upset, and directed that towards me, even though I obviously put a great deal of effort into my response.
Now I'm seriously thinking of leaving the site. Honestly, I'm only here to help (just like everyone else here) and if people aren't grateful, what's the point in wasting my time?
Rant's over. My actual question is, how do you guys keep from getting upset over hurtful feedback? I'd try not to take it personally, but it is personal. My feelings are hurt :(

Q: okay as ridiculous as this may sound i have a digital camera as most people do, but i've never actually developed the pictures...i always just keep them on the computer
on iphoto i have an album of all the pictures i want printed like they would be from a film camera
if i put the pictures on a cd and then brought the cd to like a rite aid or target would i be able to get them developed?
or how exactly does it work?
anyone know price ranges?
thank you!

I know drugstores usually have a kiosk where you can develop pictures from a CD or memory card. Also, if you want to do it online, you could try ritzpix.com, I've had tremendous success with them. I'm not sure if you live near a Ritz place, though, but you can order them to be shipped. At Ritz, I think 4x6 photos are 21 cents, and 19 if you're a member. I think 5x7s are a dollar. 3.5x5 is the smallest you can order (although you can get a set of wallet prints) and it goes all the way up to huge poster-sized photos.

Q: I am so scared! My mom just was diagnosed with anemia which is loss of red blood cells or something like that and she is going to get more blood tests done. I was reading some causes of anemia and one of them listed on a website was cancer. Do you think my mom has cancer if she has anemia? I mean, is it a rare thing that anemia comes from cancer or is it very, very common to be anemic because you have cancer? Confused.

I know a lot of people that are anemic, and none of them have cancer. It has to do with their vegetarian/vegan/redmeatless diets.

Q: This is going to sound a little stupid probably, but my boyfriend has lied to me about something small and now it's totally made me wonder if I can really trust him.
Basically, he told me that he couldn't really afford to go crazy and all-out on our one year anniversary day, which I was completely fine with, but then he kept going on about wanting to buy this Playstation 3 game that was something like $70. Anyway, I found out that he bought it a couple of days ago, but he told me it was only $10 because he had traded in some games at the same time; however, he accidentally left the receipt for it in the living room, which showed that this was not the actual case--that he had actually paid full price for the Playstation 3 game.
Now, before you think I'm crazy or something, my boyfriend and I have had problems in the past and have been working on getting our trust back for each other. (He had a wild night out with the boys once that totally crushed our relationship for awhile) It bothers me that he couldn't just be honest with me about this, I guess. I mean, it wouldn't have been a big deal at all...why lie?
Do you think I'm overreacting?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

This doesn't sound like "something small" to me. He flat out lied to you; no matter what his intentions were, it's not something he should have done. If he didn't want a big anniversary celebration, he could have said so. Ask him about the Playstation. Clarify that you aren't concerned about the money, you're concerned about the lying. I'm sure it's something you guys can straighten out, but you definitely shouldn't ignore it.

Q: So about a month a go I was hanging out with my boyfriend and our friend and our friend said that he hadnt worked all that week and that he had been bored all week. Well later that night I called his girlfriend and we were talking then she said that she hadn't seen him all tthat week and I ask why and she said that he was working then I told her that he told me differnt and then she dumped him. A few people found out that I told her that and think I purposly broke them and now everyone including her is mad at me and its been about a month and they all keep talking bad about me and they talk bad to me to my OWN BOYFRIEND! He tells them I didnt do anything and sicks up for me but even my own cusin is mad at me. How do I fix all of this? can I fix all of this? I didnt mean to do it I told her to think about it before she dumped him.

I don't see the mistake. Your friend was being lied to and you told her the truth. What do you value more, your friendship with her, or her relationship with her boyfriend? She would have eventually figured out that he was lying (if not about that week, then about something else) and they would have broken up on their own. You saved her from enduring any more of that fake relationship than she had to.

Q: Is there any way to make your feet smaller?
I have big feet and it is hard to find cute shoes that fit right. My feet are probably done growing or whatever so I don't know if I can, like, lose weight in them or do some sort of feet exercises to make them shorter. I know it sounds stupid but I thought maybe... ?
Anyone know or am I just out of luck?
If there isn't a way to actually make them smaller is there a way to make them LOOK smaller? Certain styles of shoes or something..?

I don't know about physically shrinking your feet, but I would definitely avoid the suddenly popular skinny jeans and converse look. Don't worry, your feet aren't weirder than mine, and even if they were, no one will notice unless you point it out to them.

Q: I'm 13(m) and I might be going over to my crushes house this weekend and I want to find out if she likes me the way I like her. To do that without asking her anything, dont give me don't do it, it's wrong, I want to read her diary to see if she talks about me or not, but I need to know where some places are that she might keep her diary. What I'm trying to ask is, what are some places girls hide or put their diaries and if theres a key to it where are some places girls hide or put that key?

I see you've already got four answers and I hope I'm not being too obnoxious and repetitive by lecturing you, but I don't think reading her diary would be a good idea. I don't know the girl personally, but most people hide keys for a reason. If you read her diary, she's bound to find out someday, and lose respect for you. Why not just do what everyone else does, and hang out with her more often until you figure it out for yourself? (And then post excessively long stories on advicenators asking "Does she like me?") If you really wanted to you could ask her; even if she says no she'll be flattered that you asked.

Q: It never fails, everyday I spend the day with myself. I have a couple of friends, but none that go to parties or do anything fun. It seems like everyone else is having an exciting summer with friends chilling by the pool or going to parties but I spend every night in my room watching Friends on tv. Ironic.
I don't want to just invite myself places, but somewhere I lost the old, fun me that used to have a ton of friends. Now, everyones grouped off and I've just been left behind. Getting invited to hang out in a tight group of friends has been the hardest thing. Any advice to make my summer NOT suck so bad?

They probably won't spontaneously reach out to you; try reaching out to them! Have a pool party and invite a bunch of people. Or organize an event, like a picnic or a day at a minigolf course. If that doesn't work (if people are so distant that it would be awkward to randomly invite them places) make new friends! Forget the old friends that have forgotten you. Sign up for a club or take a few sports lessons, you're bound to meet new people that way.
If all else fails, get a job! It will keep you busy, you'll make money, AND you'll make new friends! Good luck, and remember: a few nights of watching Friends does not mean you're a social failure.

Q: Do more people dislike miley cyrus than like?
I was just wondering because she "seems" popular in america, where I live , the uk, not many people seem to be that keen on her.
So my main question is how popular is she in america, and within in certain age groups do the opinions change on her?
I know this isn't a proper question, but I'm just wondering why she is so popular....

I'm 17 and think she's a terrible actor, has a weird voice, and is a sell-out. But I admire her success and some of her songs are in fact catchy. And my own experiences imply that younger girls, say 6ish to 12ish, are huge fans. Not sure why.
Oh, and I'm female.

Q: Hey, Facebook confuses me sometimes. This may sound like a dumb question, but it seems like an awful lot of stuff on facebook is still public, even if you have your profile set to private. Like it still shows "so and so commented on Jane Doe's picture" and then you see their picture even though they're not your friend just because one of your friends commented on it. My question is...
If you send somebody a message (not a wall post), is there any way somebody else could see it, or is it totally private, and just you and the person receiving the message can see it? I would think it would be private, but sometimes Facebook is creepy like that. Please help! Thanks to everyone who responds :)
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
It's private in the sense that it won't be posted on anyone's newfeed. But that person can still log on and show other people, or save any pictures/links you send to their computer. And even if you delete the message, their copy remains.
