I broke my aunt's piano in accident... no one knows.

Question Posted Monday June 15 2009, 7:03 am

Oh my goodness. Somebody please help me. I haven't slept all night because the guilt is killing me!

Okay, so yesterday I went to hang out with my cousin his girlfriend and a friend.

We all went back to my cousin's house and hung out there. Then my friend and I went downstairs to the living area to play the piano a bit.

I pressed on the 1st and left pedal, and since no one ever uses it (grand piano, long and elegant by the way), and i felt the piano move to the side a bit, but i didnt see or hear anything else. neither did my friend.

THEN as we were leaving and i was closing the lid... i saw a long crack on the top, whats itcalled, a cabinet? desktop? not sure
but above the lid.

and it was not there before!

they live in a very nice home and the piano must have cost them thousands.

my aunt and uncle are out of town, and we didnt tell my cousin either, i mean we're not sure that we did it, but im almost positive i did, i dont know i just hadnt noticed the crack...

can it be fixed? the top part (furniture part) replaced? what can i do? i bet its expensive damage.

please help me! im desperate! the guilt the guilt!

sincerely,
heirdusoleil

When you say you "felt the piano move to the side," did you mean the entire piano? Because I know my piano teacher had an old, old piano, and when you pushed the left pedal, all the keys moved to the left. (And when you pushed the right pedal, they all moved to the right.) And it was completely normal. I know you said there was a crack, but does the piano still sound okay? Damage to the wooden exterior is less drastic than damage to the actual instrument.

I'm not sure if it can be fixed, but you should definitely let your aunt and uncle know. Whatever punishment you get (if any, seeing as it was an accident) will probably be less than what you would get if you lied about it. Good luck!

Hmm, well, I have no idea what can be replaced, but I can tell you that you should probably just confess to your aunt/uncle that you think you may have broken it.

This way, they will probably be less mad in the long run, and any "punishment" they give will be less severe than if you are "caught".

You should just tell your aunt and uncle what happened when they get back. There is a chance you didn't even make the crack and if you did it was obviously an accident. It doesn't sound like you were being rough with the piano. The guilt will make you feel worse than just telling the truth (especially if you find out you didn't make the crack).

If they don't use the piano then it's probably not a big deal and the worst case scenario is you have to pay them back for the damage some how.

The truth will set you free! :)

Good luck!
