Q: Hello . . . recently I met up with my mum's best friends daughter who I hadn't seen in over 10 years. she is pretty awesome . . . told me how she went to south america for 6 months by herself, everything she said impressed me. she is beautiful and funny and stylish and she also had heaps better table manners than me. halfway through dinner i looked at her like "you are awesome" and i held the stare for too long. . . she could tell my feelings i know it. . . i can't stop thinking about this girl . . sent her an anonymous mushy text msg on valentines day . . but i haven't heard from her since that 1 night over a month ago now. i had to erase her number from my phone so i don't call her when i'm drunk. i know i have to wait for her to call but i just want to forget about her cause i know she's not into me. what's the best way to forget?
There's got to be something about her that bugged you... focus on that. We're not all perfect, you know? If you can't think of anything just make something up. You can make yourself not like someone, you can, don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise.

Q: I ahve just felt so out of it. The last crush i had lasted 2 years, and he doesn't even know that I am alive. What do I do to get them to notice me? I am really, seriously shy...
Don't be shy? There's not much I can tell you, you're just going to have to suck it up and strike up a conversation. Look in the mirror and tell yourself you're going to be tough today, because you deserve to be heard, dammit!

Q: ok, this is kinda embarassing, but i heard that the first time you have sex, it hurts (for a girl)

true...false?
It tends to hurt girls who are younger, more stressed out about the situation, who've never used tampons, who have an intact hymen. You hymen starts to deteriorate around the time of your first menstrual period, so for many women, it's gone by the age of 18. Contrary to popular belief it does not grow back.

My advice is to make sure you're darn good and emotionally ready before having sex. If you've never had oral sex or been touched, you're far from being ready. The emotional trauma of having sex for the first time too early hurts a lot more than actual penetration.

Q: I have a 1990 300ZX and the check engine light came on today and I do not have a manual. What does this mean for this vehicle?
Check engine can mean all sorts of things... some random sensor went out, there's some engine parameter off. You can't tell with a manual, you have to have an engine diagnostic performed to read your car's computer. Call around to some auto parts stores like autozone or o'rileys or whatever and ask if they'll do a diagnostic and for how much. Sometimes one of those places will have a special and do it for $20 or even free, but call 4-5 places to check it out. Either way, you can drive your car with the check engine light on but I wouldn't do it for very long.

Q: My new boyfriend and I have been having more sex lately than I've ever had before. He's quite a bit bigger than average and our frequent fucking has left me swollen and itchy. Is this unusual? Did he give me something or are we just doing it too much?
itchy I'd worry about. like, really itchy? don't have sex until the itching goes away... you might need to have that checked out. if you're just sore, you probably need to use more lubrication. don't worry, it's normal to need it. get thyself some KY next time, m'kay?

Q: How can i make a room feel calm
and want to work
buy a canvas and cover it with a light fabric and hang it on the wall. it creates a nice atmosphere, i've found.

Q: how do i go about teaching what i need without
offeding him'
honey, if he's offended, he's not the man for you! pleasing a woman isn't something that comes all that natural for the majority of men, hey, we're complicated. Sooner or later they all have to learn to accept some constructive criticism. He'll probably take it better than you think he will. Just smile a lot and offer one helpful hint at a time so he's not overwhelmed and you'll be fine.

Q: everytime I go to the bathroom, I feel the need to tuck my underwear into my vagina, is that normal?
ewe no! doesn't it stick to you funny? let it breathe!

Q: I'm 5'3& 1/2 weigh 165lbs, and would like to be 135 at least. I'm a mother of a 4-year old, live in a small apartment where the only room I can exercise in is the livingroom, and it's carpeted, and hard to do aerobics on. Can anyone recommend a good exersize mat? What's bothering me lately is that on top of all that, my face is getting rounder, and my chin is starting to sag. My mother is overweight and her chin is like that too, so I'm afraid it's hereditary. Is there anything I can do to firm this area up? I think that I'm reasonably attractive but I used to be so skinny in high school and my 20's and sometimes I get so depresssed that I'll never lose this extra weight. Most of it is in my middle, stomach, and thighs. I feel that nothing really looks good on me. I also crave junk food and I would like some advice on a sensible easy diet that doesn't require a lot of expense to get my weight under control, and don't forget about the chin thing. Whew! I need help!
I wouldn't let the chin thing bug you too much. We all change, we all have things we don't like about ourselves.

As for exercising... I'd recommend looking into yoga mats, some can be pricey but they're really good. It depends on what exercise you're doing, really. Many workouts can be done just fine on a big towel.

Recently I substituted hard candy and herbal vitamin drops into my diet instead of junk food. I think it's helped a lot, I don't crave it as much.

Q: Why do so few teenage girls today (I'm 18) care more about how their peers view them than how their peers treat them?
Trust me, it's not just teenagers. It's something that infects us from the moment we're born. Some people outgrow it I suppose, but most of us spend our lives watching commercials and reading magazine ads that tell us how to look and act for other people instead of ourselves. It wears on us.

Q: I'm 16 (a junior), and I have sort of an odd problem. I think I've found my dream college and I'm almost certain I'd be accepted there, but as I live in michigan currently, and CalArts is in California, my mom doesn't want me to go. She thinks I'd be too far away. The problem there is that that's one of the reasons I want to go there. Well, another problem is the high tuition. My dad lost his job when the economy got bad and my mom doesn't work. They really don't want to pay for it. I could get scholarships, but I'm not sure if that would be enough. I have written books and want to publish them, but I'm not sure if I could make enough money through that either. Also, my mother seems to think that the only reason I want to go to this college is because my boyfriend's planning to go to a college in California. This is not the reason at all. In short, I'm very, lost. Should I try to get into a college I'm not sure I'd be able to pay for and that my mom doesn't approve of?
eh... I'm tempted to say no. But here's why. I went to a small school. I qualified for quite a few scholarships so it was mostly paid for, and it was cheap to start with anyway. So when I got out I had no student loans. This may not sound like a big deal to you now, but trust me... I had friends who owed $25,000 or more after college and that's a TON of money when you only make $25,000 a year, which is pretty normal for a new grad in some fields.

My advice: try a cheap, close to home college for the first couple years... by close to home I mean you can visit your folks without having to buy a plane ticket, not "yay mom is dropping by for dinner AGAIN". If you're miserable, apply to the california school.

Also, keep in mind that depending on what you want to do, where you get your graduate degree makes a much bigger difference than where you get your undergrad. No point in blowing whatever budget you don't have now.

Q: Can you help me loose weight? I am 17 5 foot 4 and i weigh 180 pounds. I am too fat! I have a boyfriend and I want to look good for him. He says that I look good the way I am but i know deep down he wishes i had britney spears's body. I have tried weight loss patches but they don't work. I have tried cutting out junk food but i always give in, how can i get will power to stop! is there an easier way? please help me. i have seen ur pic and u are slim and pretty, how can i be pretty?
ps - i love ur site!
180 lbs isn't fat. Seriously, if I were you I wouldn't be so concerned about it.

If you're trying to just be healthy the best advice I can give you is to exercize and try not to eat too many processed foods, eat fresh fruits and veggies and meats and whole grain breads and organic wheat pastas. And don't snack. I get these vitamin C lozenges sometimes, and when I feel like snacking between meals I have one of those and it helps me avoid it some.

But don't let the world tell you you're fat.

Q: my boyfriend constantly thinks that i am lying to him or doing something behind his back. Lately he doesn't want to hug me or kiss me at all. He's been very cold to me for the past month. I try so hard to show him affection but it hurts when i don't get none back in return. I would just like some advice on what should i do. I have never done anything for him to think that i am unfaithful but he's just very jealous and he thinks he's sure that i am not honest and faithful. Should i try to work things out with him or what?
He's a jealous loser, why would you even consider staying with a guy like that?

Q: okay i have an open topic porject to do for school, and I chose the topic "the rise of feminism in literature", I'm thinking of specifying in Victorian literature. Now it's due for tommorrow...and I'm a tiny bit in deep shite...just wondering if you have any links or info you could give me about the sibject? Thanx! cheers
You chose a challenging topic. There's no way you'll get close to conquering it in 24 hours. There are thousands of resources on feminism, feminist literature, and feminist authors... they're all easy to find, but papers like this can't just be spit out with an advice column answer, sorry to say it! get to work and don't procrastinate next time.

Q: How did you create the animations do you need a special program for it?
To create GIF animations you'll need a program that does GIF animation, like the GIMP or animagic.

Q: I've begun to develop an inferiority complex recently.

My email goes unanswered and I wonder if the thought might be "the pest will go away if I don't reply," but since that's unlikely (i.e., the pest going away) unless requested, I move onto a second theory.

It involves a professional person who's already strung out with a busy and interesting career and who has a diverse and large number of other interests and activities which occupy time such that each of the twenty-five hours in a day are more than occupied. Hmm?

I do have B.O. (rarely halitosis) but to my knowledge that problem wouldn't be a factor because of the lack of proximity.

Notice that I'm not expecting an exposition in reply. But I am just curious if it's your spam filter or what.

You take things too personally. I just don't answer anyone's e-mails anymore... it's not that I don't like people, it's that, well, sometimes I'm just not sure what to say.

I also have B.O., so yay us!

Q: ...I have my very *first* job interview coming up! And since it's my first one, I am very nervous. :) I want the job mostly because I need to raise some money- but I know that's not the answer that the manager will want to hear. Any suggestions about what to do for the interview, other than dressing up? ;)

Much Love!
-Turc
Say you want the job for experience and education, that's better than saying you're just poor. You might also mention any good things you've heard about the company. Ask the interviewer lots of questions about the job and what you'll be doing and who you'll be working with and how much repetition there is (studies show that when we listen to people talk about themselves, they like us better). Speak loudly and clearly and be confident.

Q: I like your XMMS skins.
Are there tutorials on how to make skins in XMMS?
They're not really that hard... I just unziped a pre-existing skin and made bitmap buttons right on top of the old ones using the GIMP and ka-blam, a skin! They take a long time but they're very fun to make.

Q: Spacefem:
First of all, let me make some things clear about me. I am 13, a Christian, and - oh, yeah- I wish your advice column answers fitted your faith. I'm not saying you are not a Christian, or even saying that you should not be granted the freedom of speech. Actually, your replies make sense- but when you are "advertising" your Christianity, shouldn't the real teachings in the Bible surface in your response?
For example, someone wrote about homosexuality. You don't mention that it is written clearly as wrong in the Bible. The " I want to sleep with so-and-so. He doesn't want to. Does he love me?" questions have answers like this: he isn't worthy of you. Sorry, but that is completely off base. The guy has rights, too. If you want to sleep with him, ask yourself, is it love or lust (I'm guessing the second one)? And, God's Word warns against premarital sex.
Spacefem, can you be bold in your faith?
God's Word tells us to love one another and be very careful not to be pios and judgemental. There are a couple references in there about sexuality too, but I think if we make these our priorities we're really out of whack. The homosexuality issue really strikes a chord with me because so many Christians think homosexuals should be treated like second-class citizens because they're "sinners" or whatever. Since when does being a sinner make you unworthy of love and freedom?

I think we have to live our lives and focus on what's really important. There are a thousand little things the Bible talks about that we don't consider... do you eat shellfish? have you ever yanked out your eye because you found yourself looking at something sinful? We can't comb the Bible for little references to judge people with all the time.

Why do you think God tells us not to commit adultry? Because He's bored? No, it's because He knows that self-respecting people don't sleep around with everyone... taking care of your body means having the confidence to know that it's really worth something, and you are too good for that guy who just wants you for sex. I'm saying the same things you are, I'm just more direct about it.

Q: Do you like paul frank? Hey Wait! I can use 2000 characters... hmmm... dfgjdsfklgj'isfadjnfginr;isajnerd'wjei'fjae'rjntg'ovntsndfgh;ibrntfdsngr'iqNWE'PASFDJN'NSINGIEANRJEN;;ngsdnr;gnsrt. OK, thanks. Reply would be nice soon.
I don't like designers. I think they make too much money. Paul Frank is milking the monkey idea that's not even all the way his... I refuse to pay more to wear someone else's name.

I've been in the advice column over five years now so I think I've pretty much heard it all... the love, the hate, the random insanity. I don't take it too seriously, so I'm not always giving the best advice, but my column is fun to read!

I am a 23 year old electrical engineer, a feminist, a Christian. I don't know everything but I can sure pretend to.

Disclaimer: Now that I'm on advicenators I'm getting even more questions every day. It's fast and easy for me to answer them, yes, so at least I'm answering something now, but if your question contains the words "there's this guy that I like..." chances are I won't get around to it. I'm only answering interesting questions that I haven't answered before. Register at the site and ask everyone for advice if you must have an answer, because if people read my column and boring love advice was all they found, they'd never come back.
