Advicenators discussion: Unexplained popups theymos wrote Tuesday July 24 2007, 1:36 pm: This is a guide for stopping unexplained popups.
If popups appear only when you have a browser window open, it's coming from an add-on you have installed, or just from the sites you're visiting. Use firefox, opera, or k-meleon, which have popup blocking built in:

If you must use IE, go to tools>internet options, then the "advanced" tab. Click "reset". Then install a popup blocking toolbar, such as the Google toolbar:

If popups appear when all your browser windows are closed, you are infected with adware. Adware isn't (usually) malicious, it won't delete your data. Run a scan with these:

If the problem persists, run additional scans with these:

If this doesn't remove it, follow one of these guides:

Either will (almost) always fix your problem. theymos wrote Tuesday July 24 2007, 1:46 pm: You get adware the same way you get viruses, from links on websites and in email and from programs you download. KaZaA, bearshare, morpheus, Warez P2P and many other programs come pre-installed with adware and spyware. Limewire, Shareaza, Emule, Ares Galaxy, Azureus, and utorrent do not, though it's easy to download adware from them when you're careless. theymos wrote Tuesday December 4 2007, 5:05 pm: If this fails, post at a malware removal forum such as this one:

They will give you more specific instructions. theymos wrote Thursday February 21 2008, 8:02 pm: If the popups happen when your browsers are closed, you don't have to reset IE. theymos wrote Sunday November 9 2008, 7:47 pm: If the antispyware programs I listed above don't remove it, try this one before moving on the my other guides:
