Advicenators discussion: ..from the bottom of my heart

tommys_baby wrote Tuesday March 27 2007, 3:00 pm:
Hi. I just wanted to let you know that you give amazing advice. I'm always finding myself just sitting here, reading your column. I'm just simply amazed. You've never personally answered one of my questions, I'm just not worthy. I just wanted to let you know from the bottom of my heart, that you are just an amazing person. Don't ever stop giving advice. You have truly helped many people.

Hey there, thank you so much for you kind words. Im sure that if I never answered any of your questions its because I felt I wouldnt be able to do it properly. Or that I had nothing to add. Certainly not a matter of "worthiness" :)

Thanks again for dropping by, and for paying me such a nice compliment.

Mackenzie wrote Friday March 30 2007, 10:20 am:

Awww, that was sweet! :)

And I do agree. Alin is one of our very finest.
Alin75 wrote Friday March 30 2007, 6:59 pm:
I dont know what Ive done to deserve all these compliments, but thank you :)

Needless to say Mackenzie, the feeling is 100% mutual.
Alin75 wrote Saturday April 14 2007, 6:07 am:
Hey Thew, thx for dropping by. In fairness, I think there are a whole bunch of people that could make very good L2s. I appreciate the thought though.

That being said, I think the recent discussions on the mod board have steered the focus away from where it should be, but thats a different discussion altogether.

Cux wrote Saturday April 14 2007, 7:27 pm:
When did you change your column name?
Alin75 wrote Saturday April 14 2007, 8:44 pm:
Oh, I believe it was at the end of the last month... so that would make it a bit over two weeks. Must say, I am glad to see the old name go, I never really liked it.

Hey which reminds me, been meaning to ask you at some point, how did you piece together your name? A few times Ive tried to figure out how to read it lol.
ASAPcamille wrote Thursday April 19 2007, 7:11 pm:
I agree- they should be LV.2's

I think Jack should as well, he is our AP*(advicenators police)
Alin75 wrote Saturday May 5 2007, 10:46 am:
What happened? If you dont mind my asking...
Mackenzie wrote Sunday May 6 2007, 2:09 pm:
Storytime!
Mackenzie wrote Wednesday May 9 2007, 3:24 am:
I was just kidding, by the way, Thew. I don't seriously expect you to spill the beans on your private matters. :)
Alin75 wrote Wednesday May 9 2007, 4:54 pm:
Lol I was kinda hoping to be honest :)

Only if its not too personal/ embarrasing of course...
Mackenzie wrote Wednesday May 9 2007, 7:49 pm:
hahaha, we love Alin here on Advicenators! :D
Alin75 wrote Thursday May 10 2007, 3:34 pm:

Alin75 wrote Sunday May 13 2007, 2:54 pm:
Thanks for the story :)

3 years this summer, wow, you've been here quite a bit longer than I have.

There certainly is no shortage of silly questions on the site. I for one do enjoy reading your answers from time to time. Its very therapeutic lol.

Alin75 wrote Monday May 21 2007, 5:35 am:
Of course. The account is {o.o}[Tits]Death (named after a very silly clan I was once a part of back in 1.5).

Actually you answered one of my cs related questions a while back, about getting my computer hacked.

Unfortunately I am based in Europe, so I get lousy pings if I ever try to connect to a US based server.
Alin75 wrote Tuesday May 22 2007, 3:53 pm:
Oh cool.

Not too sure if we will ever be able to successfully take a game though (one where we are both able to play adequately). I was with this one American clan a few months ago, and basically my ping hits 100- 120 on the east coast and then progresses upwards to about 250 or so on the west coast. I see you are from CA, so that does not look too promising unfortunately.
Alin75 wrote Wednesday May 23 2007, 8:37 pm:
fy_snow and de_dust. Overall I tend to dislike most of the common maps (except dust).

I noticed you were on rats today a lot. Funny map but I never got into it. Is that your fav?
Alin75 wrote Friday May 25 2007, 4:55 am:
I get an allergic reaction just by hearing dust2 being mentioned. I dont think I have ever truly detested a map, thing, or person as much. Very frustrating that one is expected to be good at it for scrims. I would sooner scrim on he_glass lol.
Mackenzie wrote Tuesday June 5 2007, 6:12 am:
Forgive me, but what is "Steam"?
Alin75 wrote Wednesday June 6 2007, 3:59 am:
Steam is a platform from which you can run certain games. Basically you make an account with steam, then you choose the games you are interested in and pay for them. Then you just download them to your computer.

Its advantages are that game updates are downloaded automatically (no more patching your games), and also you dont need to go out an actually buy the games. Also they can offer trial periods for new games so you can check them out, just by allowing your account access to them for a short period. Its all good now that it works properly, but it was a real mess at the beginning.

We were talking about counterstrike, which is one of the games offered on steam.

Alin75 wrote Wednesday June 20 2007, 11:26 am:
CS was originally released as an extra game in the half life package. It was run like a regular game, you didnt have an account or anything like that. You just bought the game (Half Life), put in your CD key and logged in to the servers.

The servers were run through something called WON. I remember that one had a WON ID which is what they would ban when they found cheaters.

Have you ever heard the cs version of the song "I Will Survive"?

If not you can download it here:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Note the part
"We cant do s*** by simply banning your IP
Someone bring on down the console and you ban his WON ID"

Love that song.

You boys are advanced. :)
Alin75 wrote Sunday June 24 2007, 9:27 am:
I must admit that for an adult I spend way too much time with this sort of rubbish :)

Im part of the Commodore 64 generation. Back in the days when gaming started.... todays kids just take it for granted lol.
LM wrote Wednesday July 4 2007, 6:24 pm:
I take pride in my lack of a graphics card. CS is the only thing my compy can play.
Alin75 wrote Wednesday July 4 2007, 6:58 pm:
As long as you can run CS everything is just fine :)

Im curious about one thing, do you get abuse as a girl playing CS? I know this one girl who plays (girls and CS seem to be a rarity) and she complains all the time that people treat her like dirt... was wondering if you had simillar experiences?
Alin75 wrote Monday July 9 2007, 10:06 am:
Yeah I love it. Theres quite a few cs song parodies out there, but this one is definately my favourite.

Cux wrote Monday July 23 2007, 9:16 pm:
[[Hey which reminds me, been meaning to ask you at some point, how did you piece together your name? A few times Ive tried to figure out how to read it lol.]]

Right... so I never answered this.. I haven't visited your forum in forever.

I'm afraid I'd rather not explain my username... Its semi-perverted.. but when I see it- I don't really think of its meaning- its just become an original name that I use for every site I'm on.

[[I think Jack should as well, he is our AP*(advicenators police)]]

And I don't think I'm going to be an L2 anytime soon... I kind of got in trouble with DN a few weeks ago, in the same way Thew did...
The day hell freezes over will I become an L2.

As for now- I'm working to prove DN that I can be good. I still file abuse reports like no other...
Alin75 wrote Tuesday July 24 2007, 11:38 am:
Hey, well welcome back.

I will definately give you that the name is original :) Now I cant help but wonder what the perverted part was (dont worry, Im not asking you to share).

Cux wrote Tuesday July 24 2007, 2:14 pm:
Haha. I think I'm going to add you as a favorite so I can always find your column and your forum.

I just post in so many people's forums, I forget where I posted.. then I revisit- and realize that I haven't for a few months- and they wondered where I went.. haha.
Alin75 wrote Tuesday July 24 2007, 2:55 pm:
Added you as well... good to have the advicenators police on hand :)
Cux wrote Tuesday July 24 2007, 3:05 pm:
Haha.. is that what I shall be called then?
Alin75 wrote Wednesday July 25 2007, 7:09 am:
Lol well, to be honest its not like I have a very good graps of what goes on behind the scenes. But I hear you are pretty active.
Cux wrote Wednesday July 25 2007, 4:35 pm:
I used to file between 8-10 per day.. but now its more like one or two...

I just think that there is less and less abusive behavior each day.
Alin75 wrote Wednesday July 25 2007, 7:18 pm:
Thats great. To be honest I think I noticed that myself. In the past there were many more answers which struck me as insulting. Hope for humanity after all... either that or you guys really roughed them up a bit :)
Cux wrote Wednesday July 25 2007, 9:25 pm:
I've lost hope in humanity...

I think its the latter.

New Steam is pretty awesome.
Alin75 wrote Friday September 14 2007, 8:15 am:
Hey Matt. I saw that they gave it a facelift there, but at the beginning all it did was annoy me. I didnt realise what was happening at first, but I jump with shift, so every time I jumped and checked the score I would initialise that damn thing in game. I almost sent my mouse through the window... until I realised I could bind other keys instead of shift tab :)

Haven't yet really checked out the new features or anything.
ASAPcamille wrote Sunday September 23 2007, 9:08 am:
i file too many. im so annoying.
Matt wrote Sunday September 30 2007, 9:47 pm:
I use shift for walk, so it only bothers me when I check who's left and walk at the same time.

What'd you bind it to?
Alin75 wrote Sunday September 30 2007, 10:07 pm:
I have walk on my mouse, one of those buttons next to the thumb.
Matt wrote Friday October 19 2007, 7:59 pm:
Ooohhh... I never thought of using that button! I'll try it out.
Alin75 wrote Monday October 22 2007, 10:47 am:
Yeah, in the early cs days, when the regular ball mouse was still popular, it was a real problem with my setup. I had to bind walk to ALT, which meant I had to activate it with my left thumb. That was something. I was real glad when I got my first decent gamer mouse.
Cux wrote Friday November 23 2007, 5:40 pm:
Huh?
Alin75 wrote Saturday November 24 2007, 9:20 am:
Lol, I take it you dont game much?
Mackenzie wrote Friday November 30 2007, 8:53 am:
What 'games' do you play, Alin?
Alin75 wrote Friday November 30 2007, 11:43 am:
Well, time constraints dont allow my inner child to come forth as often as I would like :)

However, I am the kind of person that plays anything that isn't too luck based. I have been a computer gamer since the commodore 64 days (early 80's for you young folk). My conversation here with Matt was about counterstrike which is a game we both like very much. But like I said, I will play anything.

How about you? You game much?
Matt wrote Monday December 3 2007, 1:01 am:
I was talking with some guys in the clan I'm in, and all of them agree that 1.5 was way better than 1.6 because of the registry, and the lack of Steam.

Is 1.6 really that bad? I don't have anything to compare it to.
Alin75 wrote Monday December 3 2007, 5:33 am:
I dont think 1.6 is worse than 1.5. At the beginning Steam had so many problems I really hated the system (I think everyone did back then), but after they ironed them out it has grown on me.

Steam has the advantage that they can very easily update and patch the game. From that point of view its an improvement to 1.5. Otherwise I dont really think there is all that much difference between the two versions.

I am curious, what is it about the registry they dont like, is it the fact that you have to have an account with Steam?
Matt wrote Thursday December 6 2007, 11:51 pm:
By registry, they mean the way the bullets fly and the randomness (or lack of) the bullet patterns have when spraying. They all claim it was more accurate and realistic in 1.5.
Alin75 wrote Friday December 7 2007, 9:47 am:
Oh... I totally missed your point on that one. They might have a point. I remember that 1.6 took some getting used to in terms of playing style and being able to hit properly. I remember being frustrated with it, then I took a break for a few months (that was soon after the 1.5 WON servers were shut down). When I got back into it I learned to play it, but at that point I had to cope with being rusty as hell as well.

I read that they still play 1.5 somewhere on the internet, through something called WON2 (or something simillar). Might be worth giving a try.
Cux wrote Sunday December 23 2007, 6:03 pm:

Matt wrote Wednesday December 26 2007, 9:43 pm:
Did anyone complain about bullet registry back in 1.5?
Alin75 wrote Thursday December 27 2007, 7:53 am:
Not to my recollection.
Mackenzie wrote Thursday December 27 2007, 5:40 pm:
Ah, I see. I must say, I am not a 'gamer' or anything close to it. I have three older brothers, with the oldest being in his late 30's, so I've definitely heard of the games mentioned above, and I'm sure I'm at least familiar with a good many others.

I suppose I keep it simple with MySpace and AIM. :P It might be lame, but it's always been enough for me!
Alin75 wrote Friday December 28 2007, 8:39 am:
Hey whatever makes you happy. Gaming seems to be a predominantly male sort of thing anyway (at least if one takes shooters and strategy games and that sort of thing). We do seem driven by a desire to kill one another for some reason :)

Actually I tend not to fare too well on the kind of sites you mentioned. I run out of things to talk about within the first few minutes. Made a facebook account some months ago, got all my friends signed up (and I do have a bunch scattered all over the world since I moved a lot), and after the usual "so how have you been?" kind of questions, the account is just gathering cobwebs lol.

Matt wrote Monday December 31 2007, 1:12 am:
Then whenever a girl comes into Counter Strike, every guy seems to ask for body shots and a phone number. :X
Alin75 wrote Monday December 31 2007, 11:50 am:
I was in a clan with a girl once. She really took some abuse from time to time. Asking for a phone number is one thing, but she would regularly have guys ridicule her. She was below average as a player but guys who play at the same level do not have to endure a fraction of what she had to put up with. Even during clan scrims where you would expect a bit more restraint.
Matt wrote Monday December 31 2007, 10:41 pm:
How would the other clan even know she was a girl?
Alin75 wrote Monday December 31 2007, 11:16 pm:
Her game name was "pasty white girl" or some variant thereof. She was goth or something apparently.

How are you doing?

Oh really funny eye chart btw, really cracked me up.
Cux wrote Sunday February 17 2008, 11:43 am:
I'm doing alright. I just got out of a ridiculous relationship where all she wanted to do was make out all the time about 3 weeks ago ;]. I just recently got a part in my school's musical- CATS. Ever heard of it?

I randomly found that chart and thought it would be a nice thing for people on here to see ;]
Alin75 wrote Sunday February 17 2008, 4:26 pm:
Well I have heard of CATS, even though I am not much of a theatre person. Congrats with the part. Pardon what may seem like total ignorance, but does that mean you will have to dress up like a cat?

Must have been very hard on you that relationship... having to make out all the time. Every guy's nightmare :D
