As someone who has bipolar disorder, I cringe inwardly (and sometimes outwardly) every time I hear someone gigglingly use it to describe a moody person. Bipolar disorder ruined my life until I got a hold on it... it's no laughing matter.
Thank you for helping fight the stigma! Razhie wrote Friday January 25 2013, 6:50 pm: No worries! That's actually a copy and pasted answer from a previous question.... I think I've used it three or four times on advicenators.
I've never really known anyone with bipolar disorder, but as someone else who had serious mental illness issues as a teen, it drives me nuts how much normal, growing up behaviour gets labeled as 'bipolar' or 'psychotic' or even 'depressed'. Sometimes being in a bad mood, or being confused and irrational, or even being a bit depressed, are totally normal and healthy reactions to being alive. Not everything is a fricking mental illness! I just realized in the Supporters Forum where you are probably studying ECE. You don't have to tell me, but if you are in Hamilton it's possible your paths have crossed, or will cross at some point in your tenure there with my partner: He's a associate prof and a sessional lecturer, but he does all BioEng. And that makes me laugh! Small world and all.
