Hi I'm a thirteen year old girl and for the past 3 years or so, I've been getting yellowy, sticky stuff in my underwear. It wasn't too bad at first but recently it's been getting quite bad - as in a lot - and I'm starting to get worried. I had my first period last summer and haven't had another since. I'm a little bit worried. What if my friends see a little bit and think it's pee when we change for P.E? That would be so embarrassing! Please help. Am I normal like this?

This clearish to yellowish discharge is Normal and better get used to it cus you'll have it the rest of your life. What it is: A cleansing fluid built in to your body just for the vagina to keep it clean and yes, it shows up before first period and becomes even more pronounced, more of it to help clean after beginning to have periods. There is no female who does not have this so I'm betting, all your friends have it too. Its just something no one ever seems to mention or talk about. Girls will discuss bra size and periods long before this and yet it is a marvelous thing our bodies do.
Just an aside, because the vagina has a certain Ph balance it needs to be healthy and has both good bacteria living there as well as bad bacteria that needs flushing out, it is important to NEVER use douches or sprays or soap to clean there as use of such products can flush away the good bacteria, placing your special little ecosystem out of balance and the bad bacteria grows and you get an infection. Even if you are being careful, an infection can begin with itching, inflammation, redness and bad smelling discharge sometimes with a cottage cheese looking discharge and needs medication from doctor to get over it. Regular intake of yogurt in your diet can help. Drinking Cranberry juice can help with bladder infections for example, as long as taken early on. If let go too long, no home remedies help and you need to see a Dr. If you ever have such a concern, let Mom know ASAP, I guarantee she's gone thru the same stuff and had to see the Dr. Embarrassing but they can give you a female Dr. By the way, its a good idea to get used to what your fluids smell like when you are healthy so you can tell the difference when it starts to smell bad. It'll be obvious, like the smell of old fish, rotting meat, garbage can odor and stinky socks all rolled into one. [ Dragonflymagic's advice column | Ask Dragonflymagic A Question ]
adviceman49 answered Sunday April 12 2015, 10:42 am: Hi. This is probably not something to be too worried about as you are in the early stages of puberty. It is something that you should discuss with your mother so she can decide if you should see a doctor or not. Since you are in the early stages of puberty this is the time for you to have your first female examination by a Gynecologist (GYN).
There are some diseases, non-sexual, that know no age limits that require yearly GYN exams. Cancers of the reproductive system being one of them. What you’re experiencing does not lead me to believe you are anywhere near having that type of problem .I am just pointing out why it is important to have regular GYN exams now that you are a young lady.
Problems such as this I know are embarrassing and you fear the first question mom will ask if you go to her with a Question like this is. Have you been having sex? Maybe mom will or will not ask you that. You can head that question off by simply satiating in the beginning to mom something like, mom I'm still a virgin, or mom I am not sexually active, and I need to ask you a question."
You’re asking a question her to total strangers who are not doctors and cannot give out medical advice or diagnoses. Maybe one of the young ladies on here has had something similar to what you are experiencing. That does not mean it is the same thing as you are experiencing.
When you are having female problems such as this one your best resource is you mom. She knows you best and you are wearing her genes so it is likely she experienced what you are at your age. Mom will know if you need to see a doctor or not. Remember you and mom are built exactly alike reproductive so there is no reason to be embarrassed to go to her. This is not a question about sex but the health of your reproductive system which is also not sex.
IF you had a sore throat or a stomach ache you would go to mom for help. This is no different. So please talk to mom and let her decide if you need to see a doctor about this. Also talk to her about seeing a GYN for your first female exam if you have not already had one. [ adviceman49's advice column | Ask adviceman49 A Question ]
Jasmine23 answered Sunday April 12 2015, 2:01 am: The yellow stuff your seeing could be normal vaginal discharge. Which is completely normal around your age. Since you did have your first period last summer. and have not had one since, I would definetly go see your doctor, or your parents doctor if you don't have one regarding this issue. It may not be anything. But I always find it is better to be safe than sorry.
You could also talk to your mom about this as she was a young child once and would be able to comfort you through these changes that you are going though.
