How can I deal with these overwhelming emotions?

Question Posted Monday May 12 2014, 5:34 pm

I am devastated right now. I'm about to graduate college this weekend and I feel absolutely heartbroken. I love this school, the people, my teachers, the program so much, it is everything to me. At home I've always had a bad relationship with my parents and I don't really have close friends. My one best friend will be away for the whole year next year so I won't get to spend time with him.
Every time I return home for breaks I am miserable at home and am always in a war with my parents. The feeling of being home brings back so many bad memories. I don't know how to control this. When I'm not in school I have no outlet to apply the skills I'm good at. When I'm home for break I'm always comforted by the fact that I will return back to school soon. School is my true home.
Now it's over and I won't be coming back. I'm experiencing that devastating feeling I felt last year during finals week only this time it's worse because I feel like it's permanent. I have to live at home for at least one more year, maybe more. I'm grateful to have that but I don't know how to deal with this transition. I can't control my emotions. I sob every time I think about leaving here.
All the positive thinking in the world did not prepare me for this. Everyone else seems perfectly fine, even happy to graduate. Right now, I feel like I am losing everything. On top of everything, I might not get a part of my degree because of a failed course which changes my plans entirely for next year. I will still get a college degree but I have to change my plans and I don't know what I'm going to do. How can I deal with these devastating, scary emotions?

Given your circumstances what you are feeling sounds justified. It is kind of like homesickness in reverse! My best advice to you is think about what things and activities you love the most, then go where they are happening and try your best to enjoy yourself a little and make some new friends. Be open with the friends you already have and tell them how you feel. I am sure they will help in any way they can. What NOT to do is cut yourself off from people and sink into a deep depression. You may even need to seek some counseling to get you through this. If so, please do it, there is no shame in admitting you need a little help. I am sure this is VERY scary for you and you shouldn't try to go through it alone. You say you love the teachers and the people so go to them and let them know how you feel. I'll bet they will be very supportive while you make this transition. Even though your good friend will be away for a year with all the technology available these days he will probably still have a lot of contact with you. You don't mention what the skills are that you are good at but I am willing to bet school is NOT the only place you can apply them. Maybe you could even do some tutoring and teach these skills to others(you might even make a few bucks on the side!)If home is a bad place to be then do everything in your power to fill your life with work or activities that will get you out of the house. You can get through this! Just take it one day at a time. Best of luck to you!
