What does it mean when you have a real achy pain in your back, about in the middle? Anyone ever have this before?

In some cases, I had done something to stress my spine so it was out of alignment and I needed to see a Chiropracter to have my spine worked back to the right position. Sometimes if it isn't a sudden change, it could be due to bad posture that over time eventually brings on the pain.
Not getting enough regular exercise for the muscles of your back and then all of a sudden starting a new activity or picking it up again after a while of not doing it can stress those muscles to feel achey. In this case it would be harmless, just muscles aching in reaction to being used again and the pain will subside as your muscle strength grows. I love to garden and after a winter of no pulling weeds or clipping hedges, starting those activities in the spring again when having no alternative exercise during the winter indoors, I found my first forays into the yard producing an achy mid back every spring.
If its a sharp unbearable pain, go see a doctor right away. If your achy mid back doesnt go away after a couple weeks of strengthening exercise, then see a doctor. [ Dragonflymagic's advice column | Ask Dragonflymagic A Question ]

The problem could range from anything like a pulled muscle to a slipped or crushed disc in your spine. For a pulled muscle the treatment is generally, depending on how bad the injury, an anti-inflammatory such as Motrin and a Muscle relaxer. Possibly physical therapy as well. For a slipped disc the same medications plus a painkiller and physical therapy in hopes to reposition the slip disc. For the crushed disc and possibly the slipped disc surgical repair is also a possible.
