What do you need for a passport?

Question Posted Monday March 3 2014, 5:37 pm

What do you need to do to get a passport? Anything I should know before I start? I just found out I am supposed to already have my passport for a school trip but I have never been out of the country before and the whole thing scares me to be honest.

Getting a passport is not all that complicated or scary. Depending on where you are traveling to you may not need a regular passport and can use a passport card which is less expensive. A passport card is valid for travel to and from; Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean region and Mexico. IF you are going anywhere else you will need a regular passport.

Go to your main post office and ask for a passport application. If you are under 16 you will need a passport for minors so make sure to tell them that. Complete the application and gather the supporting documents required. The return to the post office, if you are under 16 a parent or guardian will need to be, where a clerk will examine the application, swear you to the facts contained and collect the fee. The post office will send the application to the closest processing center for processing. Allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing.

If you need your passport sooner than that an expedited service is possible for a higher fee. Just make sure to say something to the postal clerk or look for the appropriate boxes to check on the form as well.

In simple terms, there's an application form you'll have to fill in, and you need proof of citizenship.

The form and relevant instructions can be found on the government department's website.

Since you didn't say which country you're from, just click search and Google will give you the right site.
