What do you need for a passport? What do you need to do to get a passport? Anything I should know before I start? I just found out I am supposed to already have my passport for a school trip but I have never been out of the country before and the whole thing scares me to be honest.

Getting a passport is not all that complicated or scary. Depending on where you are traveling to you may not need a regular passport and can use a passport card which is less expensive. A passport card is valid for travel to and from; Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean region and Mexico. IF you are going anywhere else you will need a regular passport.
Go to your main post office and ask for a passport application. If you are under 16 you will need a passport for minors so make sure to tell them that. Complete the application and gather the supporting documents required. The return to the post office, if you are under 16 a parent or guardian will need to be, where a clerk will examine the application, swear you to the facts contained and collect the fee. The post office will send the application to the closest processing center for processing. Allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing.
If you need your passport sooner than that an expedited service is possible for a higher fee. Just make sure to say something to the postal clerk or look for the appropriate boxes to check on the form as well. ]
