How come nobody else is nervous about having to swim in school?

Question Posted Tuesday November 19 2013, 4:18 pm

I am doing the swim unit in school and boys and girls do it together. I was too scared to do it because I will be showing off my body to everyone then and girls seem to be vicious monsters that will humiliate anyone, so I asked my mother to write me a note so I can sit out. Now I just sit and watch but it seems no other boy is nervous about having to wear just trunks in front of all the girls, they look like they are all having fun, How are they able to do this?

Hey there,

Different people have different levels of confidence in themselves. I'm guessing you're in middle or high school, which is a time of growth and change in our bodies that can be quite frightening at times. However, some people handle it better than others. What I would guess is that the other boys in your class ARE nervous, too, but are hiding it better to feel macho and manly. It's perfectly ok to be shy about your body, but at some point you need to realize that your body is your body, and it's not going to go away. At some point you need to accept you for who you are. Or, if you really don't like your body (say you're overweight or something), there are things you can do to change it, like exercising or working out.

And yes, girls can be quite vicious at times, but they can also be the sweetest people, too. Remember, when someone makes fun of you, it's almost always so they can feel better about themselves. Find those people who like you for who you are, and stick to them as your friends. The others aren't worth your time.
