How to stop doing this?

Question Posted Sunday August 11 2013, 8:03 pm

Hi,
So for probably the past 6 years, I've been able to 'pop' my jaw. It doesn't hurt when I do it (Or when I don't do it), but it's a bad habit.

It doesn't pop by itself, I do it by putting my hand on the left side of my jaw and move it a certain way until it pops. Is this bad? Nothing bad has happened since I started doing it, but it's kind of grossing me out now... I try to stop, but like I said - It's a BAD habit. I probably do it like 20 times a day.

Thanks in advance.

I like the answer KatieKat wrote. The only thing I can add to what she wrote is to suggest you see your dentist about this problem. Your dentist will most likely refer you to a Maxillofacial Dentist. These are the Dentist who are also facial reconstruction surgeons.

Given your age it may be possible to fix your jaw without invasive surgery or expensive surgery. One thing for sure the sooner you correct the problem the less chance of major problems later in life.

I see your age as 15. I suggest you talk with your parents and have them make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

It won't kill you, BUT!

I did this same exact thing when I was younger. SERIOUSLY. I popped my jaw just because I could. I didn't need my hand to do it though. My doctor told me that I probably started being able to do it due to clenching my teeth and voluntarily popping your jaw can make it worse. Now, my jaw pops whenever I chew, yawn, talk. It's horrible. The constant popping gives me headaches, sometimes my lower jaw will be stuck as a result and i have to pop it to get it unstuck, which can hurt, i get earaches a lot now and I never did before.

I've been officially diagnosed with a TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) disorder, and the only way to fix it is surgically, which is expensive, so I just have to live with it for now.

Not trying to scare you, this may be totally different from what you have going on, but I certainly wouldn't wish it upon you!

My advice is to just stop doing it while you're ahead, just in case!
